With John Harbaugh’s firing by the Baltimore Ravens this week, the list of the longest-tenured coaches in NFL history abruptly changed. The NFL turnover at head coach is nonstop, even for once successful leaders.

Only one NFL head coach was hired before 2013, and even Mike Tomlin’s status as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers is tenuous.

Let’s take a closer look at the list of longest-tenured NFL head coaches and some takeaways.

More than 75% of NFL head coaches were hired since 2021

Looking at the list before of the longest-tenured NFL head coaches, you’ll see only seven were hired before 2021. More than three-quarters of the coaches have been upended since COVID. And fans of several of those coaches have been antsy this offseason calling for moving on from Mike Tomlin, Sean McDermott, Matt LaFleur, and Zac Taylor with varying degrees of intensity.

Almost 25% of the NFL will have a new coach in 2026

At least seven of the 32 teams will have a new man on the sideline for the 2026 season opener. On average, the modern NFL turns over seven coaches per hiring cycle. It was seven in 2025, as well.

Super Bowl wins is a key metric for head coach longevity, but they don’t guarantee it

Obviously in the NFL, the Lombardi trophy is the ultimate goal. Of the five coaches that have been around for more than six years, only Sean McDermott and Kyle Shanahan don’t have a Super Bowl victory and only McDermott doesn’t have a Super Bowl appearance.

There is turnover even with Super Bowl winners. Only four coaches have won Super Bowls with their current teams; Mike Tomlin, Andy Reid, Sean McVay, and Nick Sirriani. Reid is the only active coach with multiple Super Bowls with his current team.

In the last handful of years, Bill Belichick was fired by the Patriots, Doug Pederson was fired by the Eagles, Pete Carroll was fired by the Seahawks, John Harbaugh was fired by the Ravens, and Mike McCarthy was fired by the Packers despite winning the big one for the franchise.

“It was a rough trip, everybody was all over the place,” said Luis Saez, who rode seventh-place finisher Commandment. “He ran pretty well and made a nice move, but it was just a tough race.”

Commandment, one of two Derby horses trained by Brad Cox, was the co-second choice in the morning line. At post time, he ended up being the fourth choice at 6-1. Cox’s other horse, Further Ado, ended up the slight favorite over Renegade, with both breaking at 5-1.

Renegade was the morning-line favorite, despite drawing the inside post – a position that had not produced a winner in 40 years. However, the Todd Pletcher-trained colt and Irad Ortiz Jr., Jose’s brother, did everything they could to make some history of their own.

“He got a little roughed and got pushed out of his position,” Pletcher said. “But he kept on going and made his run. He just didn’t get there today.”

With the Kentucky Derby having the largest field of any U.S. thoroughbred race, longshots often find their way to the winner’s circle. Since 2019, the lowest payout for a $2 win ticket was Sovereignty last year, and his bettors still won $17.96.

One of the other big surprises Saturday was the bettors’ interest in So Happy. While he and jockey Mike Smith won the Santa Anita Derby, the colt was given morning line odds of 15-1. That was due primarily to his being sired by Runhappy, who was an excellent sprinter.

Bettors made him the third choice at 5-1.

So Happy stayed among the front pack for the first mile but faded down the stretch to finish ninth.

“He just did too much early on, and we went too fast,” Smith said.

“It’s completely different and Max is very good at adapting to these conditions. In the corners I can tell you I’ve made big progress compared to yesterday. I just couldn’t tidy up like he did and on top of that I’m missing in every straight.”

Now he’ll have to make up significant ground on the track, in what is expected to be a very wet Miami Grand Prix.
