Abramorama has acquired North American theatrical rights to “Just Sing,” a coming-of-age a cappella documentary set in a real-life, “Pitch Perfect” competition. It follows a make-or-break season with the SoCal VoCals, one of the most celebrated college a cappella teams in America, as they chase a record-setting sixth ICCA title.
Abramorama will open the film on April 24 in New York City at the QUAD Cinema and in Los Angeles at the Laemmle NoHo 7 for an Academy-qualifying run, followed by a platform release in tandem with the North American theatrical rollout. To amplify the film’s NYC and LA opening engagements Abramorama partnered with Varsity Vocals and Theorem Media to launch a one day nationwide “Just Sing People’s Premiere” event on April 23, activating 40 on-demand screenings to engage collegiate a cappella teams nationwide.
Directed by Angelique Molina and Abraham Troen, the film was an audience favorite across festivals — “Just Sing” premiered at Tribeca Festival before playing at events across North America. Abramorama will be coordinating the opening to coincide with the International Championship of Collegiate A Capella Finals, which will be held in New York City at Town Hall on April 25. The film was produced by Ventureland, Mercury Studios and WIIP.
“’Just Sing’ is a joyous, feel-good documentary bursting with incredible music—from Bob Dylan to Beyoncé to Rosalía,” said Ventureland Managing Director John Battsek and Producer Sarah Thomson. “It’s about growing up, chasing your dreams, and finding your voice. Angelique and Abraham brought extraordinary heart and craft to this film, and we can’t wait for Abramorama to share it with North American audiences.”
“This is exactly the kind of film we love bringing to the big screen,” said Abramorama’s Damon G. Smith, SVP business growth and creative strategy, and Karol Martesko-Fenster, its CEO. “It’s joyful, it’s emotional, and it’s deeply human. Angelique and Abraham have captured something really special with the SoCal VoCals: the exhilaration of chasing a dream alongside the people who matter most to you.”
Troen is an award-winning documentary filmmaker who has led and lensed documentary projects for Netflix, the BBC, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast, and OUT Magazine. His films have screened at Tribeca, TIFF, SXSW, Doc NYC, IDFA, among others. Molina’s work has aired on Netflix, HBO, BET, and PBS and screened at Tribeca, SXSW, ABFF, and the Pan African Film Festival. Her film “There Goes the Neighborhood” won best documentary at USC’s First Look Film Festival, and her feature “I’m Fine (Thanks for Asking)” debuted at SXSW 2021 before its television premiere on BET.
“A cappella is, at its core, about listening to each other,” said Troen. “And that’s really what this film is about too. The SoCal VoCals showed us what it looks like when young people show up for one another with everything they have. I’m incredibly proud of this film and grateful to Abramorama and our partners for helping us share this story with the world.”
“Making ‘Just Sing’ was one of the most profound experiences of my life as a filmmaker,” said Molina. “These students let us into their world completely — their rehearsals, their doubts, their triumphs — and what emerged was a story about belonging that I think will resonate with anyone who has ever searched for their place.”
Abramorama recently released last summer’s “The Last Class, “Elliot Kirschner’s documentary on economist and former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, which surpassed $1.3 million at the box office in its theatrical release. Abramorama also released the Richard Gere and Oren Moverman executive-produced “Wisdom of Happiness” and “Steve Schapiro: Being Everywhere,” the story of the legendary photojournalist.
