Ahead of Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU Return, Iron Man Gets a New Comic Cover Collectible

Robert Downey Jr. is finally returning to the MCU. However, not as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but as the evil Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom. This is all thanks to some classic MCU Multiverse shenanigans. He was teased at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps with an eerie post-credits scene. However, he will be making his official Marvel comeback in Avengers: Doomsday next year. Now, ahead of Downey Jr.’s villainous heel turn, Funko is giving Iron Man a new heroic Pop.

A part of Funko’s comic book cover line, this latest figure is based on Iron Man #232 from 1988. Like the cover, the figure sees an unmasked Iron Man tied up in a dangerous situation. There’s a lot of great detail to this piece, like Iron Man’s eyes being closed and the translucent smoke effect around the Marvel hero. This piece will be $24.99 USD. Like all comic book Pop covers in the past, the figure is housed in a hard plastic shell. It can also be mounted on the wall.

While Iron Man was more of a B-list Marvel hero before the MCU, with Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Captain America being way more popular, the now-iconic shared cinematic universe changed that. Iron Man was the first film out of the gate for the MCU in 2008. Casting Downey Jr. at the time was a risk, but there was no one better for the role. The Jon Favreau film was a major critical and box office success. This caused Downey Jr. to appear in ten more MCU sequels and spin-offs.

This included Iron Man 2 and 3 as well as the four epic Avengers crossover films. For almost two decades, Downey Jr. has changed the landscape of the character. He took him from his backseat Avengers comic role to a primetime spot. The character has also seen a ton of merchandise in that time span because of it. Funko has given Downey Jr.’s Iron Man an endless amount of Pops based on the hero’s different suits. He had over 40 of them in the MCU after all. Tony Stark made the ultimate sacrifice in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, but his mark on the universe is still being felt today in projects like Iron Heart.

When Does ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Release?

Downey Jr.’s sinister MCU battle begins in Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026. You can also watch his previous Iron Man films on Disney+ alongside the rest of Marvel’s extended universe. Before your next superhero marathon begins, you can pre-order Funko’s upcoming Iron Man Pop Comic Book cover on Entertainment Earth’s website. The figure is set to be released in November.
