Alysa Liu Shares the Secret to Her Signature Smokey Eyeliner Look

Another day, another beauty gem we get from Alysa Liu. After opening up about her trademark halo hair and smiley piercing, the star athlete is now sharing her 10-minute competition and everyday glam routine with Allure. In her beauty tutorial, Liu is letting us in on the secrets to recreating her super-easy signature smoky eye look, which she’s worn everywhere from the ice to Oscar after parties.

Liu starts her eye look with a $15 eyeliner-and-eyeshadow multi-stick from Sephora, which she applies over her lids and blends out using a soft brush to create a subtle gray wash that she also brings slightly under her eye. Then she goes in with “a ton” of black eyeliner from Rare Beauty to help define her eyes, as she put it.

Liu applies the waterproof gel eyeliner to both her lower and upper lash lines, then slowly but surely drags it out into a slightly downturned little flick to create a subtle cat eye. She then goes in and blends the outer flick with her finger. She adds the ultimate touch to her eye look, defining her natural aegyo-sal with an eyebrow pencil from Rare Beauty, which she also uses on her actual eyebrows. (We love a multitasking product!)

To finish her eye makeup, Liu applies a tubing mascara from Tarte to both the top and bottom lashes for a more dramatic effect. (In fact, it’s so effective that she even shares that this little tube has gone as far as replacing fake lashes for her, even during competitions!)

Also in the tutorial, Liu contours her jaw, cheeks, and nose with a $15 cool-toned Sephora stick, which she blends in with a Rare Beauty foundation brush. Liu’s choice of contour stick, which she says she picked because it’s so easy to blend, is a cream-to-powder formula that, in addition to being affordable, is super lightweight.

The finishing touches to the overall look are courtesy of a light champagne highlight from Rare Beauty, which she applies with a small shadow brush to her nose, the inner corner of her eyes, her cupid’s bow, over her aegyo-sal, and under her eyebrows. The key? Using the tiniest amount for everything to ensure a super natural but super effective look, where the smoky eyes do most of the pull.
