James Tolkan dies at 94; Christopher Lloyd and more pay tribute
On March 26, 2026, James Tolkan died “peacefully” in Saranac Lake, NY (via Back to the Future). Tolkan was popularly known for portraying Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy and CDR Tom “Stinger” Jardian in the original Top Gun film. His cause of death has not been made public. The veteran is survived by his wife, Parmelee Welles.
Following the announcement of the actor’s passing, several Hollywood figures took to social media to pay their respects.
Back to the Future’s Christopher Lloyd, who portrayed Dr. Emmett Brown, posted a photo on Instagram, featuring himself and his former co-star. He captioned it, “James, where you’re going…you don’t need roads. Miss you, friend.”
Lea Thompson, who portrayed Lorraine in the sci-fi films, posted a carousel of photos of Tolkan posing with the Back to the Future cast. She wrote, “James Tolkan. Oh boy, I loved this man. What a kind, beautiful, wonderful actor and friend. He loved his work, his family, and his fans. We had so many good times with our #backtothefuture family. Rest in peace, you were never a slacker. You were the best.”
Tolkan was born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan. He began his acting career with ABC’s 1960 television series Naked City, with a brief appearance as Evan Humboldt. He later made his film debut in 1966’s The Three Sisters. Over the course of his 50 years in the industry, Tolkan worked on over 70 projects.
The late actor’s other works include Serpico, Love and Death, Prince of the City, WarGames, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. His last on-screen appearance was in the S. Craig Zahler-directed period drama, Bone Tomahawk, in 2015. Notably, he also attended the Back to the Future reunion event.
