‘Bridgerton’ Makeup Designer Nic Collins on Season 4: “We Wanted to Soften Things”

In Bridgerton season 4’s retelling of the classic Cinderella story, Benedict Bridgerton meets his love interest, Sophie Baek, at the masquerade ball before she mysteriously takes off at midnight. Having only seen her with a mask, he searches the Ton, hoping to find her again, cross-referencing the debutantes with his memory of her glossy lips, in lieu of a glass slipper.

As the scene replays throughout Benedict’s story, Sophie’s lip color for the ball, a picturesque bright pink, inspired a search of our own; we just had to know what lip combo she was wearing. Luckily, Bridgerton season 4 Hair and Makeup Designer Nic Collins answered our calls and gave us all the details on the makeup.

Collins cleverly opted for Clinique’s Chubby Stick, utilizing one the lip version’s unique finish and then pairing it with the cheek version as well. “They’re more like stains,” Collins tells Teen Vogue. “So when you layer them up, you can get some depth to them.”

To perfect Sophie’s look, Collins started with the Clinique Lip Color Balm shade Super Strawberry. Then, she topped it with the Clinique Chubby Stick Cheek Color Balm shade Roly Poly Rosy “as the final coat to pop the lip.” Focusing on enhancing the pout and outer line, she used the Sleek Locked Up Super Precise Lip Liner shade Friend Zone, a close match to the two Clinique shades mixed.

Though Collins revealed that the makeup team experimented with a few shades, they decided on this routine to fit the Regency setting. “Even though it’s a really poppy color, it still looks quite natural,” she says. “We wanted something that would be more sheer, and the Chubby Sticks work so well because they are so sheer. It’s almost like going back in the day. You would just have your little pot of grease paint and dip your finger in and rub your lips.”

When creating looks for the debutantes, Collins similarly focused on what would fit the era. “You’re always trying to hit within the period; the roses, the blushes, all those kinds of colors that were fashionable back then,” she says. “And it’s the season of romance as well. It’s like everything is kind of a bit muted and pastel and kind of pretty.” But for Sophie, she also had to factor in her maid status and how she’d be getting ready quickly on the fly with minimal resources. “Sophie’s was more about her character, about the circumstances and how she would’ve achieved that look in that moment,” she says.
