Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot during an event on Saturday (June 7) in Bogota, Colombia.

The 39-year-old politician and current member of the Colombian senate is currently running to join the presidential race next year.

While attending a campaign event in the Fontibon district, it came under attack and the politician was shot and is receiving emergency care, according to CNN.

The news outlet reports the Bogota mayor Carlos Galán said the “entire hospital network” was on alert in case Miguel needed to be transferred.

Miguel‘s shooter has been arrested, per the mayor, and the country’s current president, Gustavo Petro, shared his condolences and solidarity with the family on Twitter/X.

“I don’t know how to ease your pain. It is the pain of a mother lost, and of a wounded homeland,” he wrote.

The Colombian government also released a full statement about the attack and shooting.

“The National Government categorically and forcefully condemns the attack that recently targeted Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay,” they wrote. “This act of violence is an attack not only against the senator’s personal integrity, but also against democracy, freedom of thought, and the legitimate exercise of politics in Colombia. Any act that seeks to silence those who participate in public life through intimidation or violence is unacceptable and deserves the deepest condemnation from the State and its citizens.”

“We express our solidarity with Senator Uribe Turbay, his family, his team, and his colleagues in the Congress of the Republic,” the statement continued. “We call on the competent authorities to immediately and rigorously carry out the necessary investigations that will lead to the identification and prosecution of those responsible for this attack. The Government of President Gustavo Petro reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of all political and social leaders and citizens who exercise their rights within the framework of the Constitution and the law. Peace, coexistence, and respect for differences are fundamental pillars for building a just and democratic society.”

“We call on all sectors of the country to unite our institutions and reject any form of political violence. Only through dialogue, legality, and respect for life can we advance toward a more equitable and peaceful country,” the statement concluded.
