Killing one of the ‘Big 7’ of the Justice League is already a diabolical feat, but wiping out a Justice League hero and their entire family is god-tier villainy. Now, DC has finally revealed which villain managed to pull off this unprecedented attack against one of the League’s founding members, and yes, it all happens in main continuity.
DC’s September solicitations have been available for months, but many fans likely overlooked the major reveal hidden in the solicitation for Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s Wonder Woman #25.
Even those who caught the telling synopsis and Sampere’s villain-focused variant cover of Diana Prince’s newest rogue may have missed the deeper implications and how they connect to the larger narrative. Fear not, this article will break down everything you need to know about Wonder Woman’s soon-to-debut Matriarch and how she slaughtered the Wonder-Family.
Meet the Matriarch: The Villain Who Slaughters the Wonder-Family & Amazons
Cover B Mark Spears Variant for Wonder Woman #25 (2025)
The synopsis for Wonder Woman #25 teases that Diana will finally locate fugitive Amazon Emilie, who appeared at the beginning of the series as the pregnant rogue who killed a bar full of men. This reunion also introduces “a tiny harbinger of death,” Emilie’s infant daughter, who is presumably the future Matriarch.
The Matriarch is Wonder Woman’s newest villain, though Diana will meet her while she is still a baby in issue #25. This child will eventually grow into an adversary who changes Diana’s fate forever. Previous issues revealed through the Sovereign that Emilie’s daughter, Lyssa, is responsible for Diana’s future death and the destruction of the Amazons, leaving only one survivor, Lizzie, Diana’s own daughter.
Fans of the series will recall that King’s Wonder Woman #19 featured a time jump showing Diana and the rest of the Amazons, including Yara Flor, Donna Troy, and Cassie Sandsmark, dead on the shores of Themyscira. The Sovereign claimed Emilie’s daughter, who the #25 synopsis implies is the Matriarch, was behind the massacre.
Wonder Woman Finally Meets Her Match in the DC Universe
Cover C Homare Variant for Wonder Woman #25 (2025)
The revelation that Lyssa is the future Matriarch, combined with the earlier reveal that she is responsible for the death of the Amazons, with only Lizzie surviving, is a lot for fans to process. Adding to these lore-changing developments is Wonder Woman #25’s D variant cover by Daniel Sampere, which gives readers their first full look at the Matriarch.
The character design for the Matriarch is one of the most striking villain designs of the past decade. Her monochromatic costume appears inspired by Crusader armor, and she is portrayed as a sword-wielding Amazon who also wields a Green Lantern ring and a Legion of Super-Heroes ring. Everything so far suggests Wonder Woman may have finally met her proper match.
Wonder Woman #25 is available September 17, 2025, from DC Comics!
