HUT ONE, HUT TWO: It’s easy to see where the ethos of Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe syncs up with Freitag, the Swiss firm that markets sturdy, practical and sustainable accessories crafted from upcycled truck tarpaulins.
Following a 2023 holiday collaboration with their Comme des Garçons brand, Kawakubo and Joffe have invited Freitag to set up a permanent space at Dover Street Market Ginza, slated to open on Saturday, in parallel with a temporary installation at Dover Street Market in London.
Both units will showcase three exclusive styles of shoppers and key-holders shaped like Dover Street Market’s signature “hut” emblem, which nods to the cash wraps at their retail emporiums that blend Comme des Garçons brands with cutting-edge labels.

Japan represents an important market for Freitag, which counts “very loyal, long-term” clients there, according to Oliver Fischhaber, Freitag’s product manager and product lead. He lauded Dover Street Market’s visitors, who “have a highly educated eye and a deep sense of authenticity — precisely the audience we love to engage with.”
Freitag operates 30 freestanding stores worldwide, four of which are in Japan.
The permanent space at DSM Ginza draws inspiration from truck interiors, and how loads are secured for long hauls on European roads. Elements include heavy-duty floorboards, anchor rails and a variety of tension belts.
Founded in Zurich in 1993 by brothers Daniel and Markus Freitag, Freitag gained fame for its messenger satchels, each piece a one-off that can be repaired for an extra-long life. Today, the brand’s collection spans around 60 models including belt bags and backpacks, also incorporating salvaged car seatbelts and transforming old ski boots into cell-phone cases.
