General Hospital’s Giovanni Mazza Opens up About Filming Gio’s Reveal Scene

General Hospital’s Giovanni Mazza recently reflected on his character’s emotional outburst at the Nurses’ Ball after uncovering his true parentage. The scene became one of the most powerful and talked-about moments in recent daytime television. Here’s what he had to say.

Giovanni Mazza says General Hospital executive producer helped him film Gio’s reveal scene

Giovanni Mazza joined the cast of General Hospital about a year ago. Since then, he has blended into the show seamlessly and become one of its most important characters in recent months.

Few could have predicted the range and depth he displayed at the Nurses’ Ball. After Gio discovered his true parentage and broke down on stage, his rage toward Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) and Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) came through powerfully on screen. The performance left fans awestruck.

Speaking about the scene to Soap Opera Digest, Mazza said, “I think I’ve been working very hard with this moment in mind. I didn’t know that I had it in me, but I’ve never experienced something like this before… I sort of connected to that feeling of vulnerability, of the rug being pulled out from under me, and I built up all the momentum and then I just let it go, and whatever happened happened.”

He also credited Amanda Setton for his performance. He said he would not have pulled the scene off without witnessing Amanda’s work and her character’s journey over the last five months.

Mazza further acknowledged Frank Valentini, the executive producer who helped him film the sequence. He revealed, “So I talked to Frank [Valentini, executive producer], and he gave me some great adjustments on set. I sort of just took it, built the momentum up again, and let it go again.”

He elaborated that Frank explained Gio’s motivation as coming from a place of vulnerability. Mazza added, “But the way that Frank guided me, with coming from that place of vulnerability and the feeling of not being wanted, that generates the story to come.”
