Harry Styles Runs in New Balances and a Band Tee (and You Should, Too)

Runners love to let other people know that they enjoy running. Case in point: Harry Styles chose Runner’s World as his publication of choice to promote his new album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. And well, when you’re as good of a runner as Styles is, then more power to you. The musician is quite the serious pavement pounder, having two marathons under his (running) belt. Last year, Styles ran both the Tokyo and Berlin marathons, the latter of which he did in just under three hours, an impressive feat for even the most elite runners. (For context, only about 5% of marathon finishers are able to clock in sub-three-hour times, and if we were able to do that, hell, we’d want to be on the cover of Runner’s World, too.)

This weekend, Styles is set to hit Studio 8H for the second time, once again pulling double duty on Saturday Night Live as both host and musical guest. Given the week-long prep that goes into getting ready for the sketch comedy show, Styles has been out and about in New York City ahead of his sophomore return. That means fans have been seeing the singer doing some pretty mundane NYC things like walking the Williamsburg Bridge (with his girlfriend, Zoe Kravitz), grabbing coffee, and even clocking a few miles on the city streets.

On Wednesday, Styles was seen wearing a refreshingly casual running outfit, which was something of a departure from the highly technical and race-ready fits he wore to run his two marathons. He sported an oversized long-sleeve band tee for George Clinton’s funk outfit Parliament, which he paired with two-inch split shorts, and Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses, which is, frankly, quite a luxurious choice of eyewear for a workout.

Given the casualness of the run, Styles swapped out his regular speedy Nike Alphafly 3s for the cushier and more bouncy New Balance 1080 v15s—an excellent pair of shoes for easy and recovery runs. The overall look is what we’d describe as a great, personality-forward dirtbag gym fit. The fitness world has been flooded in stretchy Spandex tops and lickety lycra, so workout fits that channel the cotton-forward looks of the ’70s are a welcome reprieve from synthetics. It’s also a big signifier that you’re one who’s truly about to get after it. (Need further proof? Just check out how J.K. Simmons is pulling up to the gym.)

The worst part of Styles’s running kit, though? It’s gotta be the wired headphones with the phone in the hand. That’s just the move of a sadist. Then again, maybe the most elite runners don’t let anything hold them back from getting a run in.
