Of all the lines that fill New York City sidewalks, the Sandy Liang sample sale brought out one of the more colorful ones. Dressed in pinks, reds, and whites and adorned with bows, the devout fans of the designer patiently waited to be handed stickers to cover their phone cameras, granting them entry to the sale for 30 minutes.

While some happened to swing by when the line was short, some dedicated Sandy Liang fans, like Silvia Mumu, started lining up at 7 a.m. Mumu found the bow-adorned Leonie dress for $300, but originally wanted it in black. That didn’t even matter, though, because the next stop was a store with clothing dye. Others found the perfect match for them. Lillian Penther spotted a skirt in the same print as the Sandy Liang shirt she already had, and she happened to be wearing it that day.

Accessories were quite popular. The bow bag, whether it was the shoulder or the belt version, was a popular option. Among the stacks of boxes, filled with everything from heels to ballet sneakers, some found shoes in their size and walked away from the sale with an extra pep in their step.

While some looked out for products a friend who couldn’t make it might have wanted, others were shopping for their own furry friends. Tiffany Zhao’s favorite find was the mini pink knit sweater for pets, complete with the signature Sandy Liang heart charm sewn on the sleeve.

Companionship, perhaps, might be the most noteworthy thing from the scene of the Sandy Liang sample sale. While shoppers waited in line and sorted through the racks, they caught up with friends, coworkers, or partners and talked to strangers. They compared how long they’ve waited in line and what hauls they’ve seen online. They showed each other their finds, debated what was worth the investment, and shared styling tips.
