Navigating the narrative of the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension DLC is a process. You’ll need to research the anomalies plaguing Lumiose City, then slowly progress through the storyline after each research step.

Eventually, you’ll reach a point where you can start catching more coveted Mega Evolutions, including Mega Darkrai.

It’s At The End Of The Story

After making your way through the story and completing the Hyperspace Lumiose Survey No. 6 Main Mission, you’ll be tasked with creating the Bad Dreams Cruller Donut. This is a fixed requirement that unlocks the last stage of the campaign, where you’ll face off against the final enemy: Darkai. Prepare for the battle ahead of time, as Darkai will fight you first in its base form before powering up into its Mega state.

For reference, Mega Darkrai is weak to:

• Fighting type (2x)
• Bug type (2x)
• Fairy type (2x)

Mega Darkrai is also resistant to:

• Ghost type (0.5x)
• Dark type (0.5x)

And is immune to:

Weirdly, Mewtwo is an MVP here, as you can get one for free, and it sports at least one powerful fighting-type move (Aura Sphere), which Darkrai is weak to. Even though it’s mostly a psychic-type Pokémon, you can re-arrange your moveset before the battle, and Mewtwo has two Mega Evolution options to boot. After taking out Mega Darkrai and winning the battle, you’ll get Darkranite.

Since this is technically a story-based Rogue Mega Evolution battle, if you get knocked out (or run out of time), you can resume the battle again on the game over screen.

How To Get Darkrai In Pokémon Legends: Z-A

You’ll Get One From The Battle

After completing the battle, you’ll get a chance to catch a Darkrai, no strings attached. This is a scripted event, and Darkrai is dazed, so you can use any Poké Ball you want. You’ll need to watch the credits roll, then you’ll wake up in Hotel Z, ready to use your brand-new Darkrai, and its Darkranite, which allows you to trigger Mega Darkrai.

Once you’re done with the core campaign of Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Dimension, there’s still a lot of cleanup left. You can enter portals and get all the new Pokémon you’ve missed, and grab a few more Megas via Side Missions and postgame content.
