ISL 2025-26: Mohun Bagan looking to bounce back with win in home clash against Mumbai City

Two of the Indian Super League’s (ISL) most successful clubs are set for a high-stakes encounter as Mohun Bagan Super Giant hosts Mumbai City FC in a top-of-the-table clash at the Salt Lake Stadium on Friday.

Defending champion Mohun Bagan currently sits atop the standings with 13 points from five matches and will be keen to consolidate its lead. Mumbai City is close behind, placed third with 11 points from as many games. The Islanders have the opportunity to leapfrog to the top with a win.

The two sides head into the fixture on contrasting notes.

Mohun Bagan was held to a goalless draw by Bengaluru FC in its previous outing, bringing an end to a prolific run that saw it score 14 goals across its first four matches while conceding just twice.

In contrast, Mumbai City showed resilience and character, securing a 2–1 victory over Inter Kashi FC despite being reduced to 10 men.

History, however, favours the visitor. Mumbai City has long proven to be a difficult opponent for Mohun Bagan, winning seven of its 12 meetings. Mohun Bagan has managed just one win while four matches ended in draws. That record will undoubtedly linger in the minds of the home side as it prepares for the contest.

Mohun Bagan head coach Sergio Lobera acknowledged the significance of the fixture, describing it as a “massive game” and emphasising the importance of extending the lead at the top.

“It is a big game – a massive one, and exactly the kind of contest I enjoy. Our objective is to finish at the top of the table, and a win here would open up a significant gap, especially given the short nature of the season,” he said.

“Victory would be valuable not just for our position in the standings, but also because it would come against a rival likely to be competing with us for supremacy at the end of the season,” Lobera added.

Mumbai City coach Petr Kratky expressed confidence in his team’s preparation. While recognising the challenge posed by a strong Mohun Bagan side, he underlined his belief in his players’ ability to compete and deliver in a demanding contest.

“They are a strong side, and it will be a difficult game for us. However, I have full belief in my team, which has prepared very well for tomorrow,” said Mumbai City head coach Petr Kratky on the eve of the match.

“Our objective is to compete with the same intensity we have shown in every game this season and to trust in our abilities. We expect a very competitive contest, but we know it is not beyond us,” he added.

Both teams remain unbeaten after five matches, adding further intrigue to what promises to be a closely fought encounter.

Mumbai City will, however, have to cope without defender Hmingthanmawia Ralte (Valpuia), who is suspended following his red card in the previous match.

With Jamshedpur FC drawing 1–1 with Sporting Club Delhi on Thursday, the race at the top has tightened even further. A win for either side on Friday could define the early momentum of the season.
