January 8, 2026, is a sad day for Star Trek international fans that marks the end of a decade of binging Starfleet’s voyages in the final frontier. Several classic Star Trek series have been available on Netflix since 2016, that comes to an end on the eighth day of January 2026.
Thanks to streaming on Netflix, Star Trek reached new audiences especially during the dark period when there was no new Star Trek television being produced. After Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in 2005, Star Trek TV’s ‘dark period’ lasted 12 years until Star Trek: Discovery premiered on CBS All-Access (later Paramount+) in September 2017.
In 2011, Netflix began streaming Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Star Trek: The Animated Series in the United States. By September 2021, all of those Star Trek shows were removed from Netflix and moved to Paramount+.
However, international Netflix subscribers continued to enjoy the six classic Star Trek TV series under a deal that started in 2016. Unfortunately, after 10 years, that deal is now set to expire.
Five Classic Star Trek Episodes Leave Netflix On January 8
Sadly, Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise will all exit Netflix internationally on January 8, 2026. Potentially, the higher cost of licensing Star Trek under Paramount Skydance is the reason, but it’s also possible the deal expired and Netflix opted not to renew Star Trek‘s license.
The classic Star Trek shows became part of Netflix internationally as part of a co-financing deal for Star Trek: Discovery. Although Discovery was streamed on CBS All-Access/Paramount+ in the United States, it was labeled “A Netflix Original Series” internationally. In 2023, Star Trek: Discovery became a Paramount+ exclusive series in the US and internationally.
Netflix, both in the US and in global markets, was a boon to classic Star Trek.
Netflix, both in the US and in global markets, was a boon to classic Star Trek. In particular, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise were seen by new fans who were either too young or skipped them during their original runs. Those three Star Trek shows gained a greater appreciation than they did when they were new.
December 31, 2025, Is Another Sad Day For Star Trek Fans
For Netflix subscribers in the United States, J.J. Abrams’ trilogy Star Trek movies leaves the service on December 31, 2025. For the last few months, Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond were available to stream on Netflix.
Paramount Skydance recently canceled the long-in-development J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek 4 in favor of developing an original Star Trek movie idea.
The 13 theatrical Star Trek movies are intermittently licensed to various streaming services like Prime Video and HBO Max, as well as Netflix, so it’s not unlikely J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, as well as the Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation movies could pop up on another streamer or return to Netflix at a later date.
In the meantime, the lack of guarantees in streaming is a strong argument to own physical media copies of your favorite Star Trek series and movies.
Star Trek’s Biggest Tragedy On December 31, 2025
Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 also leaves Netflix in the United States on December 31, 2025. Star Trek: Prodigy‘s exit from Netflix is both a tragedy and a travesty. Buoyed by a passionate fan campaign, Netflix rescued Star Trek: Prodigy after it was canceled by and purged from Paramount+ in 2023.
Netflix’s license for Star Trek: Prodigy was for 18 months per season. All 20 episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 premiered on Christmas 2023 on Netflix. Star Trek: Prodigy season 2’s 20 episodes were completed and premiered in July 2024.
Unfortunately, Netflix did not order Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 or renew its license past the initial agreement. As a result, Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 left Netflix in July 2025 and season 2 will follow on New Year’s Eve.
Compounding the mistreatment of Star Trek: Prodigy, when the beloved animated series leaves Netflix, it will not be available for streaming. For fans without physical media, Star Trek: Prodigy goes into limbo, and it’s unknown if Paramount+ will bring Prodigy back to complete its claim as “The Home of Star Trek.”
