Laverne Cox Embraces Retro Mugler Corsetry

Laverne Cox reinterpreted Mugler‘s ’90s style for the red carpet premiere of “A Very Jonas Christmas Movie” in New York City on Monday night.

The four-time Primetime Emmy Award-nominated actress turned to Mugler’s fall 1996 ready-to-wear collection, borrowing a corseted style. The strapless piece featured sinuous lines with an inverted neckline, with fabric designed in a curved, pyramid-inspired shape.

Curvature continued as the key design feature of the corset, creating a defined silhouette with a cinched waistline. Coordinating her corset, Cox wore a pair of pantaleggings in a shiny PVC-like fabric from Garo Sparo. She also wore coordinated gloves in the same material.

When it came to standout accessory pieces, Cox turned to Antonela K Millinery, wearing a black circular fascinator with an off-center pillbox hat and netted, overlapping circles. Cox wore statement silver earrings to accentuate her look, and her makeup included smokey eyes with a deep crimson lip. Cox’s blond hair was pulled back into a slicked back, tight chignon.

Cox’s corseted look hails from the re/edit archive capsule, which made waves earlier this fall. In late September, Selfridge’s partnered with Mugler for the ‘80s and ‘90s capsule collection pop-up. The pop-up focused on Mugler’s precision tailoring and lingerie-inspired detailing, along with sculptural eveningwear that blurred the lines between couture and ready-to-wear and defined the designer’s approach. The pop-up concluded on Oct. 12.

Known widely for redefining power dressing in the ’80s, Mugler’s fall 1996 collection capitalized on employing feminine sensuality with commanding silhouettes and coordinated pieces. Gothic-inspired all-black looks in the collection were juxtaposed sparingly by pops of color, with a few designs in pink, orange and blue.

Mugler is now under the creative direction of Miguel Castro Freitas, who was appointed to the role in March. Freitas has a long history in the fashion industry, working with such brands as Sportmax, Dries Van Noten and Christian Dior Couture.

Most recently, Freitas debuted the spring 2026 collection during Paris Fashion Week in October. The collection made references to the archetypal showgirl, with Joelle Diderich writing in WWD’s review, “Freitas’ stabs at edgy glamour, like the pert breasts poking through fringe tops and the bias-cut dress suspended from nipple rings, were a reminder that behind every fantasy lurks a darker side. Even showgirls get the blues.”
