While the box office has been dominated in these last few weeks by major titles such as Zach Cregger’s Weapons, James Gunn’s Superman, and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, another film has quietly delivered excellent results. The long-awaited legacy sequel Freakier Friday may not have broken out quite like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last year, but it has snuck past the coveted $100 million mark worldwide, and has out-grossed the Mean Girls musical from 2024.
With nearly $90 million domestically and another $55 million from overseas markets, the movie has made a cumulative total of $143 million worldwide. It’s currently among the 20 highest-grossing films at the 2025 box office, having overtaken bigger titles such as Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Karate Kid: Legends, The Accountant 2, and the Jason Statham vehicle A Working Man. There is a good chance that the movie passes the coveted $100 million mark domestically before the end of its run.
Freakier Friday is a sequel to the 2003 film Freaky Friday, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. In these two-plus decades, both stars have had their share of ups and downs. Curtis has won an Oscar and headlined a trilogy of Halloween movies, while Lohan has essentially come out of retirement and re-established herself as a star. She previously headlined three holiday-themed movies for Netflix, but Freakier Friday is her first theatrical film in years.
Sydney Sweeney’s Last Four Films Have Flopped
Remarkably, the movie has out-grossed the combined global haul of the last four films starring Sydney Sweeney, who is currently in the same position that Lohan was in over 20 years ago — an ingénue on the cusp of stardom. She’s drawing Oscar buzz for her performance in the upcoming film Christy, but Sweeney delivered two back-to-back bombs recently: the neo-Western Americana, and the survival thriller Eden. Last year, she was featured in the superhero bomb Madame Web, and the low-key horror film Immaculate. Combined, these four movies have grossed less than $140 million. You can watch Freakier Friday in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
