Universal Pictures and Illumination debuted the first trailer for Minions & Monsters during the 2026 Super Bowl on Sunday, February 8. The spot featured a Minion shouting “minions” and then “monster,” followed by a loud roar, before prompting viewers to “watch the trailer.” The full trailer was released online immediately after the spot aired.

Universal Pictures will release Minions & Monsters in theaters on July 1. Pierre Coffin directs the animated feature and voices the Minions. Brian Lynch wrote the script, and Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan serve as producers. Coffin previously directed the first three Despicable Me films and the original Minions spinoff.

The new film is described as the “rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.” Its tagline reads: “Hollywood has a monster problem.”

The last appearance of the Minions was in 2024’s Despicable Me 4, which followed the 2022 release of Minions: The Rise of Gru. That film earned $125.1 million during its opening weekend, setting an Independence Day four-day opening record and marking the second-best opening in the franchise.

The Despicable Me franchise began in 2010 and has included four mainline films and two previous Minions spinoffs. The Rise of Gru followed a young Gru in the 1970s and introduced Otto, a braces-wearing Minion. The franchise has grossed nearly $5 billion globally.

During a 2024 interview, Despicable Me 4 director Chris Renaud stated, “There are always conversations like that, and what we can do and where we can go with the characters.” He added, “How can we keep it exciting and fresh? We’ll see what happens” (via The Hollywood Reporter).
