Netflix’s New 8-Part Crime Thriller Series Is Quietly A Global Streaming Sensation

Netflix‘s new eight-episode crime series is quietly dominating the global streaming charts.

Although it’s still early in the year, Netflix has already launched a diverse slate of crime series. There’s been His & Hers, a limited series led by Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal that’s focused on a murder in a small town. There’s the return of The Lincoln Lawyer, which in its fourth installment focused on the protagonist Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) going on trial for murder. There’s also The Seven Dials Mystery, for fans of Agatha Christie.

The new French saga Cash Queens, one of Netflix’s newest crime offerings, is exploding globally. As of this writing, the dramedy is in the Top 10 in over 30 countries. That includes France itself, where the series tops the charts and comes in at #1. Cash Queens also ranks highly in Brazil, Chile, Kenya, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Co-created by Carine Prevot and Olivier Rosemberg, Cash Queens centers on five cash-strapped women as they join forces to rob a neighborhood bank. They are convinced that the heist will transform their futures. But as events begin to spiral beyond far out of their control, they must find themselves in the unenviable position of having to quickly improvise in the hopes of escaping with their lives intact.

With a cast that’s led by Rebecca Marder, Zoé Marchal, Naidra Ayadi, Pascale Arbillot, and Tya Deslauriers, with François Damiens, Sami Outalbali, Olivier Rosemberg, and Jonathan Cohen also starring, Cash Queens is a crime series that’s based on a true story. It draws inspiration from the Gang des Amazones, five women who robbed seven banks in the South of France in 1989. Their story also inspired the 2025 film Unsubmissives, as well as 1994’s loose comedic adaptation Les braqueuses.

Also known as Les Lionnes, the French title is an international series without many reviews online. On IMDb, the eight-episode dramedy has a rating of 5.6 out of 10 based on 156 votes. But in his recommendation for ScreenRant, Greg MacArthur writes that Cash Queens is a fun and quick binge.

The real-life adaptation, in any case, fits nicely in the reliability of the crime genre in all of its different forms. It’s a type of story that’s easy to sit down and watch without necessarily having to commit to a second chapter or a longer arc. Cash Queens may not be among Netflix’s best crime shows. But, for many, it’s been worth a look.
