The 2024-2025 TV season has ended, and now audience members can look forward to networks throwing up new shows and brand-new seasons of their favorite ones. However, prior to the network shows taking a break, several shows were axed. Over at NBC, in early May, the verdict came in regarding the network’s courtroom comedy, Night Court. Starring Melissa Rauch as Judge Abby Stone, it was announced that the show, which is a reboot of the classic Reinhold Weege sitcom, will not be returning for a fourth season. With NBC locking up the gates of the courthouse, will we see the comedy continue elsewhere?
While we Night Court fans might be hoping that NBC might be willing to shop the comedy series out, recent reports don’t offer much hope. Per TV Line, “early efforts to shop the sitcom revival have thus far come up empty,” the report says in part, adding, “the eventual verdict is looking… not great.” It is disappointing news, especially given that Season 3 served out its final two episodes with a bombshell reveal that changed everything for Judge Stone. The Season 3 finale, now turned series finale, saw Rauch reunited with her Big Bang Theory co-star and husband, Simon Helberg. It was the pair’s first TV reunion since their stint on Big Bang.
Night Court kicked off its run brilliantly when it debuted in 2023. According to Nielsen ratings at the time, the reboot had been NBC’s biggest comedy premiere since 2017, its red-hot start surpassed only by the reboot of Will & Grace. The series ultimately settled into a steady groove, bringing comedic courtroom antics to television screens on Tuesday nights. The series stars Rauch as the daughter of the late Anderson’s Judge Harry Stone, who shares her father’s sunny disposition and interest in the people that walk into her courtroom. Night Court also had its old Emmy-winning star John Larroquette back in the fold as the cynical prosecutor turned public defender Dan Fielding. However, heading into Season 3, the show began to experience a slow and steady decline of its viewership, ultimately resulting in its cancellation.
Melissa Rauch Had Big Dreams For ‘Night Court’ Season 4
Night Court certainly brought some nostalgia with it during its three-season run. The series brought back three veterans of the original show to star alongside Larroquette once again, with Brent Spiner and Annie O’Donnell reprising their roles as the Wheeler family and Marsha Warfield playing former bailiff Roz Russell. For series lead Rauch, the actress was reunited with several of her Big Bang Theory colleagues, including Kate Micucci, Kunal Nayyar, Laura Spencer, and Mayim Bialik, and, Helberg in the Season 3 finale. Rauch, prior to the series cancellation announcement, shared some of her expectations for a new season:
“There will be some questions that we desperately want to answer in a Season 4 [after this finale], and we have a really spectacular game plan in place if that should happen. We really want [Night Court] to [continue] because I feel like there’s so many more stories to tell, and especially the story in this season finale. There’s a major story there that we want to continue to tell.”
All episodes of Night Court Season 3 can now be streamed on Peacock.
