The Winter Olympics gold medal game between Team USA and Canada in women’s hockey was a heavyweight fight for the ages that took overtime to settle. Team USA’s Megan Keller played the ultimate role of hero, getting the puck on a breakaway and slotting home the shot to give USA the gold medal.

Canada was the dominant team for much of the game, regardless of how it appeared close because of shot totals. Team USA wasn’t able to generate a lot of quality looks with a suffocating Canada defense clogging up passing lanes, blocking shots, and preventing the U.S. from crashing the net to generate second-chance opportunities.

It was a game that required a spark, and it came late for Team USA in the most dramatic fashion as Laila Edwards got a clean shot with a pulled goalie and an extra attacker, which was redirected by captain Hilary Knight to become Team USA’s all-time leading Olympic goal scorer.

The goal signified a massive momentum shift, with Canada appearing to be on tired legs while USA got the surge of adrenaline it needed. Entering 3v3 overtime, the energy was all behind the United States, with Canada playing scared, struggling to control the puck, and their only two overtime chances coming off missteps by Team USA.

Pushing the tempo during a Canada shift change, the U.S. was able to get a breakaway for Megan Keller off a long pass, which she slotted home on a brilliant drag to give Team USA the win and the gold medal.

It was an absolutely staggering performance for the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team that prevailed through adversity in the final to prove they really were that good. In the lead up to the games they were the team to beat, dominating Canada and the field to become the best team in the world — but getting that ranking, and winning gold are very different stories. Now there’s no doubt: Team USA is the best in the world.

Former U-23 Asian Championships Bronze medallist Lalit will be challenging for gold in the men’s 55kg Greco-Roman category in the Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday, while two more Indian wrestlers will be aiming for the bronze medal.

Twenty-three-year old Lalit dominated China’s Huoying Shi in the semifinal to register an 11-3 victory before Aman (77kg Greco Roman) and former champion Sunil Kumar (87kg Greco Roman) went down in their respective semifinal on a mixed opening day for the Indian contingent.

Lalit, who had bagged the bronze medal in the Muhamet Malo Wrestling meet last month, will now take on 2025 Asian Championships bronze medallist Ikhtiyor Botirov of Uzbekistan after he defeated the local favourite Ulan Uulu in the second semi-final 5-3.

In the 77kg Greco-Roman semifinal, Aman went down against Zagreb Open gold medallist Ali Oskou of Iran, 13-3. The Indian, who had reversed a 1-4 deficit to win 6-4 against China’s Halishan Bahejiang in the quarterfinal, will now face Yeonghun Noh of South Korea in the bronze medal match. 2020 Asian champion Sunil Kumar lost his 87kg Greco-Roman semifinal against Gholamreza Farokhisenjani of Iran 0-8.

The San Diego Padres are starting to improve following a rough start to the season as they head to Pittsburgh to face the red-hot Pirates on Monday night in the opener of a three-game set.

The Padres won a series for the first time this season when they beat the Red Sox in Boston in back-to-back games, including 8-6 on Sunday.

San Diego’s anemic offense, which entered the day with a major-league-worst .190 batting average and .553 OPS, woke up thanks to Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill, who combined for eight of the Padres’ 12 hits in the Sunday victory.

The Padres will need the production to continue on Monday when they send German Marquez (0-1, 12.00 ERA) to the mound to oppose fellow right-hander Bubba Chandler (0-0, 0.00) as San Diego attempts to stop Pittsburgh’s five-game winning streak.

Machado hit his first home run of the season Sunday as the Padres scored the most runs they’ve had in a game this season. It was only the second time in nine games that San Diego scored more than three runs in a contest.

Both of those games have come during this stretch of three wins in four games.

“Just to see Jackson go 3-for-5, Manny go 2-for-4, and Bogaerts go 3-for-3, if we get those guys moving the baseball the way they did today, we’re going to win a lot of baseball games,” Padres manager Craig Stammen said on Sunday.
