Spain returned to the top of the FIFA men’s rankings after six months, having dethroned reigning world champion Argentina to lift the World Cup with a 1-0 win in the final on July 19.
Ferran Torres struck the winner in extra time as La Furia Roja had the last laugh in the summit clash. The latest ranking keeps Spain atop the rankings in both men’s and women’s football. The women’s team is the reigning world champion, having beaten England in the final.
Meanwhile, Argentina (men), led by Lionel Messi, fell one spot to second. France remained third despite finishing fourth in the quadrennial tournament.
Morocco, the semifinalist at Qatar 2022, continued its ascent to get to sixth, its best-ever position in the rankings. The Atlas Lions continued their form in the 2026 World Cup, beating the Netherlands on penalties in the round of 32 and reaching the quarterfinals, where they were humbled by France.
