The natural chemistry between Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) and Josh O’Connor (The Crown) is overflowing in an exclusive to Collider behind-the-scenes look at the pair’s upcoming project, The History of Sound. Celebrating the film’s recent release, we’re thrilled to share a sneak peek of the heartfelt passion that these two powerful actors poured into their latest roles. Charting the course of a friendship-turned-romance, the Oliver Hermanus (Beauty)-helmed flick uses the power of music to tell the touching story of two young men who use the artform to connect with others along their travels.

Pulling the curtain back, our exclusive sneak peek sees Mescal and O’Connor in the thick of production, with the pair set up in the studio to record some of the feature’s goosebump-inducing melodies. Speaking of the “gentle” and “playful” energy that they each brought to the table, both actors praised the other one for making the shoot such a comfortable one. The very real connection and respect between the pair overflows in the behind-the-scenes look, a vibe that will only further drive the experience that lies ahead of audiences in cinemas.

Penned by Ben Shattuck and based on a series of the author’s short stories, The History of Sound centers around Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), two young men whose paths first cross in 1917 while both are students at the Boston Music Conservatory. As their bond begins to grow during these early days of friendship, the pair is torn apart for a bit when David ships off to fight for his country in WWI. After returning, the two men pick up their relationship and uncover a deep love between them while they travel through the Maine countryside to learn and record a collection of folk songs from the locals.

Although the characters portrayed by Mescal and O’Connor may lead the pack in this romantic musical drama, there are plenty of other important players that contribute to the story. Joining the leading men is a lineup that also includes Chris Cooper (American Beauty), Molly Price (Third Watch), Gary Raymond (House of the Dragon), Raphael Sbarge (Once Upon a Time), Emma Canning (Dune: Prophecy), Briana Middleton (The Tender Bar), Leo Cocovinis (Desperate Hours) and Alison Barlett (Materialists).
