The natural chemistry between Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) and Josh O’Connor (The Crown) is overflowing in an exclusive to Collider behind-the-scenes look at the pair’s upcoming project, The History of Sound. Charting the course of a friendship-turned-romance, the Oliver Hermanus (Beauty)-helmed flick uses the power of music to tell the touching story of two young men who use the artform to connect with others along their travels.

Pulling the curtain back, our exclusive sneak peek sees Mescal and O’Connor in the thick of production, with the pair set up in the studio to record some of the feature’s goosebump-inducing melodies. Speaking of the “gentle” and “playful” energy that they each brought to the table, both actors praised the other one for making the shoot such a comfortable one. Penned by Ben Shattuck and based on a series of the author’s short stories, The History of Sound centers around Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), two young men whose paths first cross in 1917 while both are students at the Boston Music Conservatory. As their bond begins to grow during these early days of friendship, the pair is torn apart for a bit when David ships off to fight for his country in WWI. After returning, the two men pick up their relationship and uncover a deep love between them while they travel through the Maine countryside to learn and record a collection of folk songs from the locals.
