Try Sporcle’s new quiz type by sorting items into categories,
and then create your own on any topic you love.
I tried a sortable quiz and had two thoughts almost immediately.
- That was fun!
- I could definitely make one of these.
That’s kind of the hook.
You start by dragging a few things into the right places, thinking it’ll take a minute or two. Then you second-guess one choice, then another. Suddenly you’re replaying the quiz for the 3rd time because you know you can get a perfect score.
And then, somewhere in the middle of that, it clicks:
I could make one of these about something I know way too much about.
What is a sortable quiz?
A sortable quiz is Sporcle’s newest quiz type where players drag and drop items into the correct categories.
Instead of typing answers or picking from multiple choices, you’re organizing things you already recognize like characters, foods, teams, or countries into groups they belong to.
How do sortable quizzes work?
Sortable quizzes are simple to pick up:
- You’re given a list of items
- You’re given a set of categories
- You drag each item into the category where it belongs
- If you sort something incorrectly, you know right away (so you can sort it correctly next time!)
That’s it. No instructions needed. You just start sorting.

Why they’re so fun to play
What makes sortable quizzes different is how familiar everything feels.
You’re not trying to recall obscure facts, you’re working with things you already know. Which is why they feel easy at first… and then delightfully tricky once you get into it.
There’s almost always:
- One item that throws you off
- One category you overthink
- One near-perfect run that makes you try again
It’s simple, but in that “one more try” kind of way.
They work for just about anything
One of the best parts of sortable quizzes is how flexible they are.
You can sort things like:
- Movie or TV characters by group or origin
- Foods by cuisine or ingredient
- Athletes by team or position
- Countries by region
- Songs by artist or era
If you can group it, you can turn it into a quiz.

Why you might want to make one
After playing a few, it’s hard not to start thinking about your own ideas.
Because if you’re the person who:
- Knows every character in a series
- Has strong opinions about food or music
- Can group things instantly in your head
…you already have everything you need.
Creating a sortable quiz is really just:
- Picking a topic you love.
- Choosing a few clear categories. Quiz creators can set up to eight categories. These go in the “answer column”.
- Adding items that fit into each one. These are the questions or hints players will sort into the categories and be either text or images. These go in the “question column”.
That’s it. You’re turning something you already know into something other people can play.
Play one or make your own
If you want to see how it works, try a few sortable quizzes and see how close you get to a perfect score.
And if you find yourself thinking, “I could make one about ___”, you probably should! Because the best sortable quizzes come from people who know their topic/fandom inside and out.
Drag, Drop, Sort, Create. Repeat…
