Cher notably wore the striking creation in 1975 to perform “Shame Shame Shame” on The Cher Show alongside Tina Turner, who also rocked a complementary gown with inverted colors.
The halter-neck black crêpe bodysuits were custom-made for the diva duo specifically for this performance, which you can watch above. The designs featured turquoise and pink grosgrain ribbons, adorned with mirrored silver metal discs for an extra flashy quality, that cascaded into floppy car wash skirts.

Tina Turner’s dress was sold at an auction by Julien’s in 2018 for $6,400. Both dresses were on display at The Standard Oil Building in Beverly Hills, California, as part of the Icons & Idols: Hollywood & Street Contemporary Art Auction preview.
While neither Carpenter nor her long-time stylist, Jared Ellner, has shared where they sourced Cher’s dress from, it’s clear that this serve will go down in VMAs fashion history — even if it technically happened after the show.
