Sherrone Moore’s wife, Kelli, reported that the former University of Michigan coach was “suicidal” before his arrest, according to a 911 dispatcher.
On Thursday, December 11, TMZ published excerpts of 911 dispatcher audio that was recorded leading up to Sherrone, 39, being taken into custody in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Wednesday, December 10. Police have confirmed that they were called to the property “for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault.”
In the audio excerpts, a dispatcher can be heard relaying that Sherrone’s wife of 10 years was worried that he was feeling “suicidal” after “losing his job today.” Sherrone was fired as the University of Michigan’s head football coach earlier on Wednesday when an investigation uncovered an alleged “inappropriate relationship” with a school staffer.
The 911 dispatch audio also included a report of Moore “attacking” a woman at the address of a Michigan football employee on Wednesday. In a separate clip, a dispatcher reports that Moore “walked in with a knife” prior to police arriving on the scene.
Along with the release of the audio, Michigan historian John U. Bacon revealed on Good Morning Detroit that Sherrone is allegedly being surrounded by mental health professionals in the wake of his arrest.
“That is obviously a serious matter,” Bacon, 61, added.
Later in the interview, Bacon disclosed that the University of Michigan conducted an investigation over the summer into allegations of an improper relationship between Sherrone and a staffer. At the time, Sherrone and the unnamed staffer allegedly denied “anything was happening between them, which didn’t give UM much to go on.” According to Bacon, the situation escalated rapidly when the staff member “flipped” their story on Wednesday.
This bombshell series of events kicked off with University of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel announcing Sherrone’s firing due to “credible evidence” of an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.
“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” Manuel, 57, said in a statement.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that there had been “lots of whispers and speculations” about the school in the weeks leading up to Sherrone’s firing.
“If the school is going to take a step on Wednesday that it did, and announce that it is firing Sherrone Moore for cause, and saying he had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, then, clearly, something this week developed that the school felt like it had irrefutable evidence, and was left with no other choice,” Schefter, 58, said.
On Wednesday evening, The Detroit News reported that Moore was taken into custody near the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road, after police arrived to investigate an alleged assault. The official charges against Moore are unknown, as of publication.
Online court documents showed that Moore was booked at the Washtenaw County Jail at 8:30 p.m. ESPN reported that the coach is expected to appear in court on Friday, December 11.
The Pittsfield Police Department subsequently clarified in a statement that the “incident does not appear to be random in nature” and there seemed to be “no ongoing threat to the community.”
“Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as possible,” police said.
Sherrone was fired from the University of Michigan after two seasons as head coach. He has been temporarily replaced by interim head coach Biff Poggi, who previously substituted for Sherrone earlier in the season while he served a two-game suspension as part of a sign-stealing investigation.
