With the next major theatrical film in the franchise currently scheduled to premiere next March, and other exciting collaborations and future projects confirmed to be in the works, it appears 2026 will be another good year for Sonic the Hedgehog fans. The iconic speedster has headlined several exciting titles since 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog kicked off the franchise’s latest renaissance.

Now, after a hugely successful run in comics with 2025’s DC x Sonic the Hedgehog, the two franchises are scheduled to reunite once again in the series’ continuation, titled DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion. The next entry in the limited series will launch on May 5, 2026.

Sonic’s Latest Comic Collaboration Is Speeding Towards a May 2026 Release

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion will be another five-issue limited series that will act as a direct continuation to its 2025 debut. Last year, the series brought both franchise’s most iconic characters together, when Sonic and friends received help from the Justice League against a shared enemy in Darkseid.

This time, mysterious mechanical rings appear which link both universes, and though the heroes are glad to be reunited once more, it’s revealed that a hidden enemy is pulling the strings from the shadows. Ian Flynn, the head writer of the Archie and IDW Sonic comics, is returning to the series, joined again by artist Adam Bryce Thomas. Flynn commented:

“I had an absolute blast the last time around. I’m really happy that the tease we left at the end of the first crossover is finally coming to fruition. I hope everyone enjoys this second go-around as much as I did writing it.”

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion will debut with a 32-page first issue, available for purchase on May 5, 2026. Fans can expect more Sonic characters as DC heroes in the series’ upcoming continuation.

SEGA’s Iconic Speedster Is Celebrating His 35th Anniversary in 2026

2026 is Sonic the Hedgehog‘s 35th anniversary, and fans of the franchise expect many other releases to join DC x Sonic the Hedgehog later this year. The celebration began with the digital release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in September 2025, the physical release of which is scheduled for March 2026.

The soft-launch of Sonic Blitz, a mobile game from Rovio and SEGA, was recently discontinued for further development, and is expected to release globally later this year. Fans are also suspecting that a new mainline game is in the works to celebrate the Sonic franchise’s latest milestone.
