Nicholas Pooran was Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) best option for the Super Over, given his record against Sunil Narine in T20 cricket over the years, LSG coach Justin Langer said after the loss to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match here at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium on Sunday.
Coming in to bat first in the Super Over, Pooran was cleaned up by Narine off the first ball. LSG managed just one run as Narine had Aiden Markram caught the very next delivery. KKR wrapped up the game off the first ball to register its second win in eight matches.
“We knew Sunil Narine would bowl, and if you look at Nicholas Pooran’s record, he’s faced Narine more than almost anyone in world cricket,” Langer said after the game. “We felt he was still our best option.”
Pooran hasn’t been among the runs this season: 82 in eight innings at an average of 10.25 and a strike rate of 81.18. Acknowledging the dip, Langer added, “I know he hasn’t hit form yet, but if anyone can produce a big moment, it’s Nicky. You back your best players. He has struggled, but the numbers say no one plays Narine better than him. Unfortunately, it didn’t come off.”
Langer also pointed out that such phases are part of the game. “Even great players like him – probably one of the greatest T20 players of the last few years – it just shows he’s human. You can’t force confidence. You can try to look confident, but it comes from getting your processes right and working every day. He’s putting in the effort to get it back.”
At the halfway mark, LSG would have fancied its chances after restricting KKR to 155 for seven. However, it might not have crossed even 140 if not for Rinku Singh’s unbeaten 83 off 51 balls. KKR was 112 for seven after 18 overs before Rinku smashed 17 and 26 in the final two overs. Langer admitted those late runs proved costly.
“For 18 overs, we felt on top of the game. Then they get 40-odd at the end, suddenly get a sniff, and with two world-class spinners like Varun (Chakaravarthy) and Sunil (Narine), they would have felt right back in it,” he said.
KKR fast bowler Vaibhav Arora also credited Rinku’s late burst, including four consecutive sixes off Digvesh Rathi in the final over. “We won because of Rinku’s innings. Had he not played that knock, we wouldn’t have reached that total. On this pitch, 155 was a decent score,” he said.
Arora added that while the pitch was challenging, it wasn’t unplayable. “I thought we bowled really well, especially in the PowerPlay, where we conceded just 37 runs and picked up a wicket. That phase gave us momentum, and then we controlled the middle overs very well.”
The pacer also said there was no confusion over the Super Over bowler. “Sunil Narine has been our best bowler and has been with us for so long that everyone trusts him to do the job, and he did it superbly. There wasn’t much confusion; we had our best bowler, so we had the advantage going into the Super Over.”

Lucknow Super Giants is still trying to find its best combination but feels it is one match away from getting its IPL 2026 campaign going, spin bowling coach Carl Crowe said here on Saturday.
Super Giants, currently ninth in the standings, have changed their batting line-up on multiple occasions in seven games so far. Captain Rishabh Pant opened in their first game with Mitchell Marsh before Aiden Markram was given that role. Ayush Badoni has opened with Marsh in the last couple of games.
“I think in terms of one of those changes, it was very much a match-up. In the modern game, you try and recognise what the options are going to be and plan accordingly,” Crowe explained on the eve of LSG’s fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium.
“When you’re not playing quite so well, you’re trying to find that perfect match-up, but at the same time stability is vitally important,” he added. “It’s about still trying to find the best combination for us, and when you do find that combination, you try to stick with it for as long as possible.”
Crowe said the LSG batters are aware of their shortcomings in the first half of the league stage and are working hard to overcome them. “We are one match away from smashing it and getting to where we need to be,” the coach said.
The contest will be played on a black-soil pitch – a surface that will be used for the first time this season. However, Crowe said it doesn’t matter which surface the game is played on.
“So, it’s black soil tomorrow, I believe. From a foreign perspective – and I know this is probably more of a coach’s view – sometimes we can make a bit too much of the conditions before the game, whether it’s red soil, black soil or mixed.
“If you come in with a preconceived idea of how a certain pitch is going to play, you limit your plan,” Crowe said.
Meanwhile, KKR’s Anukul Roy said that the team’s first win last week has boosted players’ confidence. “Whatever we are trying to do, we haven’t been able to do up to the mark. Results can go up and down. We are trying to win every game possible from here,” Roy said.
When quizzed whether Matheesha Pathirana will be available for the game, the youngster remained tight-lipped. “He has been practicing with us for the last week. You’ll only know at the toss tomorrow if he’s playing or not,” Roy said.

Lucknow Super Giants is still trying to find its best combination but feels it is…
In a rare slow-burn Indian Premier League (IPL) contest, Rajasthan Royals defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 40 runs at the Ekana Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday by successfully defending this season’s lowest total.
After the Royals managed just 159, Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger reduced the Super Giants to 11 for three in the PowerPlay, as Ayush Badoni, Rishabh Pant and Aiden Markram fell for ducks.
Nicholas Pooran’s painstaking 25-ball 22 ended just as the West Indian looked to tee off in the face of a mounting required rate. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Bishnoi’s stranglehold through the middle meant the host was always behind the eight ball.
With 61 runs needed from five overs, Mitchell Marsh’s steady presence in the middle gave the home fans hope before the Australian was undone by Burger’s slower one.
Riyan Parag’s low diving catch at extra-cover to dismiss the dangerous Mukul Choudhary was the last nail in LSG’s coffin. Brijesh Sharma and Archer later completed the formalities.

Earlier, after the Super Giants elected to bowl, Mohammed Shami steamed in, with a slip in place on a spicy pitch, and delivered a pearler that was angled on leg-side but moved away late to kiss Dhruv Jurel’s outside edge and into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. A ball earlier, Shami had dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal with a bouncer after he had carted Shami for three consecutive fours.
In the following over, Mohsin Khan stemmed the flow of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s exuberance by homing in on a good length consistently, which resulted in five dot balls, before Sooryavanshi rushed into a fatal slog.
Sensing the situation, Parag didn’t go feeling for the ball when Shami strode in again, with the RR skipper leaving one in the channel before solidly defending—pure Test match stuff.
RR’s top-order juggernaut had ground to a halt, crawling to 44 for three inside the PowerPlay.
Mayank Yadav’s 0 for 56 in four overs was the sole blemish in an otherwise spotless Super Giants bowling performance.
However, Jadeja and Impact Player Shubham Dubey’s 49-run partnership off 25 balls was crucial in consigning the Super Giants to their third straight defeat at home.

Lucknow Super Giants will take on Rajasthan Royals at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana International…
Punjab Kings remained unbeaten and retained its top spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) standings with a commanding 54-run win over Lucknow Super Giants at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium here on Sunday.
The host’s bowlers rose in unison to defend a mammoth 254, this season’s highest total, which was set up by Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly’s blistering 182-run partnership off 80 balls for the second wicket.
The Super Giants were cruising at 61 for no loss in the sixth over, with Ayush Badoni’s promotion as opener reaping dividends, before Vijaykumar Vyshak dismissed him off the last ball of the PowerPlay.
Rishabh Pant’s consecutive sixes off Marco Jansen in the following over, including a trademark one-handed swing that cleared long-on, kept Super Giants’ hopes afloat.
However, with Pant and Nicholas Pooran falling in the span of two overs, and 113 runs to get from the last five overs, the Super Giants were fighting a battle they couldn’t win.
Earlier, batting first for the first time this IPL, the Kings rode on Priyansh and Connolly to post 254 for seven, this season’s highest total.
The left-handed duo’s assault on a hapless attack was of such magnitude that the final five overs, which yielded 61 runs, seemed sedate in comparison.
The Kings were roaring at 179 for one after 13 overs, following a 32-run over bowled by Aiden Markram, which contained five sixes.

Prince Yadav, the only LSG bowler who escaped the host’s wrath, put the skids on the scoring rate by dismissing Connolly with a short ball, before M. Siddharth prised out Priyansh in the following over.
After Super Giants elected to bowl, Mohammed Shami nicked off the in-form Prabhsimran Singh with an outswinger in the first over, while Prince kept Connolly quiet.
Once the field opened, Connolly, who was lucky not to have a leg-before appeal reviewed when he was on 4, made Pant & Co pay and raise a 35-ball fifty.
Priyansh, though, operating on a wholly different wavelength, brought up his half-century off just 19 balls to set the perfect launchpad and the win.
