Indian women’s hockey team chief coach Sjoerd Marijne has called for improved field-goal conversion despite his team’s successful return to the FIH Pro League after winning the Nations Cup.
India defeated host New Zealand 2-0 in Sunday’s final, courtesy of goals from Navneet Kaur and Sunelita Toppo, to clinch its second Nations Cup title and secure promotion to the Pro League.
“Of course, we are delighted to win our first tournament and final together,” Marijne said after the victory.
“It was crucial for us to learn how to win finals, especially after our recent heartbreak against England in the World Cup qualifier. The team improved with every match. We relied on a very strong and well-organised defence.”
The Dutch coach, however, said India’s finishing from open play still requires improvement.
“While we created enough opportunities to score more, that remains an area where we must keep working. Our penalty-corner conversion was very good throughout this tournament. If we can achieve a higher conversion rate for field goals, that will be fantastic.”
Marijne also acknowledged the challenge of entering the competition as the highest-ranked team.
“It is never easy to win a tournament when you enter as the highest-ranked team. We showed that we can manage that pressure well.
“Moving forward, playing against the top teams in the world will provide an important learning process for our youngsters. Testing ourselves at the highest level is exactly what we need to grow to the next tier.”
India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, defeating the USA, Japan and Uruguay in the group stage before overcoming Chile in the semifinal.
Striker Lalremsiami was named Player of the Final, while drag-flicker Deepika finished joint top scorer with six goals alongside USA’s Ashley Sessa.
Hockey India announced a cash reward of Rs. 3 lakh for each player and Rs. 1.5 lakh for every member of the support staff.
Captain Salima Tete said the title was a reward for the team’s preparation.
“It feels absolutely amazing to lift this trophy. Our entire team worked incredibly hard for this moment. We entered this tournament with a clear mindset to bring the trophy home. Securing promotion back to the Pro League was extremely important for us. I am proud that we achieved our goal.”
Looking ahead to the World Cup in August, Salima added: “This victory provides a massive boost to our confidence. The team is playing with a very strong mindset right now. Every single match in this tournament was highly important for us. This win gives us the perfect momentum for our future preparations.”

India dropped to sixth in the latest World Test Championship (WTC) rankings after Bangladesh improved a rung to fifth with a crushing 2-0 series sweep against Pakistan at home.
Bangladesh had earlier won the first Test by a massive 104 runs in Mirpur, and, with another big win on Wednesday, it leapfrogged India as per the latest ICC update.
Bangladesh now has 58.33 percentage points with two wins, one loss and a draw in four Tests, while India has 48.15 points from nine Tests, four wins and as many defeats along with a drawn Test.
India, which featured in the finals of the first two editions of the WTC, is now ranked only above Pakistan in the rankings among Asian countries. The Shubman Gill-led side has not played a Test match so far this year.
A one-off Test against Afghanistan is lined up from June 6, but it is not a part of the WTC cycle.
The Indians are due to tour Sri Lanka and New Zealand for two Tests each later this year before facing Australia at home in 2027.
India had lost to South Africa 0-2 in a home Test series, while two other defeats had come in England, where the Shubman Gill-led side had drawn the five-match series 2-2.
The teams are ranked not on the basis of points but percentage points in the WTC points table. Bangladesh has 28 points while India has 52 in the 2025-2027 cycle.
Pakistan, which was bowled out for 358 chasing 437 in the second Test, remains in eighth spot with only one win and three defeats in four Tests in the current cycle so far.
Australia, which has seven wins and one defeat in eight Tests \in the current cycle, continues to lead the WTC points table with 87.50 percentage points, followed by New Zealand, which has 77.78 points after two wins and a draw in three Tests.
South Africa is placed third, followed by Sri Lanka.

New Zealand will play at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after beating Papua New Guinea 1-0 Wednesday in the final of the Oceania Confederation Qualifying Series.
Sunderland midfielder Katie Kitching scored the only goal of the match in the 55th minute, sending New Zealand to a World Cup for the seventh time.
Papua New Guinea still has a chance to qualify through an inter-continental playoff during the international window in November or December.
New Zealand was denied twice by VAR, four times by the woodwork and repeatedly by Papua New Guinea goalkeeper Betty Sam who was outstanding in a hard-working defence.
Deven Jackson appeared to have scored from Rebecca Stott’s through ball in the 32nd minute but the VAR showed Jackson had been caught by PNG’s offside trap.
New Zealand was awarded a penalty in first-half stoppage time after Maya Hahn was brought down in the box but the decision was overturned after the officials considered replays for more than five minutes.

New Zealand’s finishing let it down on numerous occasions, notably when Jackson missed an open goal in the 51st minute.
“It’s amazing. We had a job that we had to get done tonight and we did what we needed to do to get the result,” New Zealand coach Michael Mayne said. “We’re over the moon with going to the World Cup and now we can plan and see what we have to do this year to get ready for the World Cup.
“At halftime we spoke about our finishing. Frustration had to be tempered. We were creating, we felt a goal was going to come and it was one of those games in which we had opportunities but weren’t clinical when we needed to be.”
Papua New Guinea didn’t have a shot on goal but it’s defence was superb. It earned its place in the final with a 1-0 win over giant-killer American Samoa while New Zealand beat Fiji 5-0 in the semifinals.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” Papua New Guinea coach Ericson Komeng said. “We weren’t clinical enough tonight to compete with New Zealand but I’m proud of the girls for all the hard work they put in today.
“We just have to go back and work on little things and get ready for the playoff.”
