The 25-year-old Adams died two weeks after helping South Africa reach the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time.
Authorities have not released a cause of death.
“Cape Town central police registered an inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male on Saturday,” police said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
Police said the body was discovered at a property in the Cape Town neighborhood of Schotsche Kloof at around 11 a.m. on Saturday, but gave no more details.
Adams’ father, Juanito Adams, told South African TV news station eNCA on Sunday that the family was waiting for the results of an autopsy and had not yet made any funeral plans.
“As you all know, it was an untimely death. The family is struggling to process it,” Juanito Adams said. “It won’t be easy to carry on. People say it will become easier, but it won’t. You just learn to live with it.”
Adams played in all three of South Africa’s group games as it produced its best performance at the World Cup. He did not feature in the 0-1 loss to Canada in the round of 32 on June 28.
South Africa Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said Adams had played in his team’s group game against Czech Republic hours after learning that his grandmother had died. McKenzie asked the public and media to “exercise restraint and compassion” and not speculate on the cause of Adams’ death while authorities conduct an investigation.
There were moments of silence and tributes for Adams at the England vs. Norway and Argentina vs. Switzerland World Cup quarterfinal games on Saturday.

Bangladesh had earlier won the first Test by a massive 104 runs in Mirpur, and, with another big win on Wednesday, it leapfrogged India as per the latest ICC update.
Bangladesh now has 58.33 percentage points with two wins, one loss and a draw in four Tests, while India has 48.15 points from nine Tests, four wins and as many defeats along with a drawn Test.
India, which featured in the finals of the first two editions of the WTC, is now ranked only above Pakistan in the rankings among Asian countries. The Shubman Gill-led side has not played a Test match so far this year.
A one-off Test against Afghanistan is lined up from June 6, but it is not a part of the WTC cycle.
The Indians are due to tour Sri Lanka and New Zealand for two Tests each later this year before facing Australia at home in 2027.
India had lost to South Africa 0-2 in a home Test series, while two other defeats had come in England, where the Shubman Gill-led side had drawn the five-match series 2-2.
The teams are ranked not on the basis of points but percentage points in the WTC points table. Bangladesh has 28 points while India has 52 in the 2025-2027 cycle.
Pakistan, which was bowled out for 358 chasing 437 in the second Test, remains in eighth spot with only one win and three defeats in four Tests in the current cycle so far.
Australia, which has seven wins and one defeat in eight Tests \in the current cycle, continues to lead the WTC points table with 87.50 percentage points, followed by New Zealand, which has 77.78 points after two wins and a draw in three Tests.
South Africa is placed third, followed by Sri Lanka.

South Africa plans to arrive in Mexico almost a fortnight before the opening game of the World Cup in order to acclimatise to the altitude, coach Hugo Broos said. Co-host Mexico opens the tournament on June 11 with a Group A match against South Africa at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, which is 2,200m (7,216 feet) above sea level.
While most of the South African players are based at clubs in Johannesburg, which has an altitude of 1,753m, Broos says his squad needs time to adjust to the conditions in Mexico before the opening game.
The squad will travel on May 30 to their base in Pachuca, which is around 200 metres higher than Mexico City. The city is less than 100 km from Mexico City.
“The first days it will be difficult to train at 100 per cent because of the altitude, so that is what we will do in the second week,” Broos said in a radio interview.

South Africa plans to take on Nicaragua at home in a friendly on May 29, although this is not confirmed, and is negotiating to have Puerto Rico as a warm-up opponent for a second international scrimmage in Pachuca. In its other World Cup group matches, South Africa will meet the Czech Republic in Atlanta on June 18 and South Korea in Monterrey on June 24, seeking to advance past the first round for the first time in its fourth World Cup appearance.
“It’s not an easy group for us. First of all, we will face the host in the opening game, at the Azteca Stadium, and it will be very difficult for us there,” Broos said earlier in the year. But the veteran coach, who played for semifinalist Belgium at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, has also previously predicted his side could cause some upsets at the tournament, which is also being played in Canada and the U.S.
South Africa and Mexico drew 1-1 at Soccer City in Johannesburg in the opening game of the 2010 World Cup, which South Africa hosted.
