Not many batters are synonymous with the way the art of willow-wielding has exploded this Indian Premier League (IPL) quite like Tim David.
The broad-chested Aussie of gigantic frame (6’5”) has been one of the best exponents of power-hitting, scoring his 173 runs this campaign at a whopping strike-rate of 203.52. He also has more sixes than fours (14 to 12), in line with his overall IPL career (74 to 66).
But the 30-year-old, who recently became the second fastest to score 1000 IPL runs (560 balls), also felt that the Indian domestic talent has stepped up dramatically to become bold and belligerent.

“The first part is that you have the Impact subs… you get an extra player,” said David in the lead-up to Friday’s match against Gujarat Titans here. “It is also that the depth of the domestic talent in India has improved so much and these guys come into the IPL ready to hit sixes.
“Earlier, you would need specific overseas players to be power-hitters, like Chris Gayle. But you now look at all the Indian domestic players and the international Indian players, and they all hit sixes. That’s stepped up throughout the competition.”
However, despite totals routinely going north of 200, David opined – without saying in as many words – that it was still a cat-and-mouse contest between batters and bowlers.
“Bowlers have lots of weapons in their arsenal now and are definitely a lot smarter. You’ll see the summary on the TV, they talk about where the bowlers can target and they’ve obviously graphed out where batters score quickly and what they’re weak against.
“If the bowler lands a perfect yorker, it’s going to be difficult to score off. But they know that if I’m standing down and they’re going to miss, I’m going to try and hit them for a six.”

Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Tim David was on Monday fined 25 per cent of his match fee and docked one demerit point for “disobeying an umpire’s instruction” during the IPL game against Mumbai Indians.
David was guilty of breaching Level 1 of IPL’s code of conduct for players and team officials, while Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya was also fined for maintaining slow over-rate.
The IPL said in a statement that David was found to have breached the Article 2.4 of the IPL’s code of conduct.
Pandya was fined after RCB’s innings took a little over two hours to finish.

“Hardik Pandya, Captain, MI, has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate. As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, he has been fined Rs 12 lakhs,” the IPL said.
In fact, the contest had players from both teams taking several pauses amid hot and humid conditions. While the first innings ended in two hours and one minute, the second innings finished in two hours and four minutes.
David is said to have not handed over the ball to the umpires twice during RCB’s innings in which the burly Australian scored a quick 16-ball 34 not out with three sixes and two fours.
“The first incident occurred when the umpires changed the ball during the 18th over (17.2) of RCB’s batting innings. He wanted to have a look at the ball and did not hand it over despite being repeatedly asked to do so,” the IPL said.
“The second incident occurred during the 20th over (19.2), when he again did not hand over the ball to the umpires, amounting to repeated failure to comply with the instructions or directives of the umpires,” the IPL said, adding that David has admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction.

Tim David showed exactly why Royal Challengers Bengaluru retained his services for the 2026 season with a scintillating power-hitting display for the defending Indian Premier League (IPL) champion on Sunday.
The 30-year-old Australian clobbered eight sixes in his unbeaten 70 off 25 balls as Bengaluru scored a 43-run win over Chennai Super Kings to make it two wins from two.
In an innings of huge hits, David drew gasps with a monstrous 106m strike that landed on the roof of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
“I’ve been getting in trouble during training with the boys,” Player-of-the-Match David said of the six.
“We have competitions to try and hit them on the roof, and we’re obviously on the side pitches. So, to get one during a match out of the middle, help it up on the roof, it was good fun.”
Bengaluru tops the early-season standings with a net run rate superior to that of Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, who also began with back-to-back wins.
Bengaluru’s Rajat Patidar thumped 48 not out off 19 balls and David, who plundered 30 runs from a Jamie Overton over that included four sixes, said the captain’s approach helped set the platform for his late burst.
“Rajat was absolutely smoking it and I was taking balls off him so to be able to get us to a score and obviously put a lot of pressure on the opposition,” he added.
Chasing 251 for victory, five-time champion Chennai Super Kings managed 207 before being bowled out with two balls left in its innings.
“If you look at the score, we were ahead of them up to about five overs to go,” CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said.
“And then they just went like a rocket. So, that’s really where the game was lost for us.”
It was a third straight defeat for Chennai Super Kings, which slipped to the bottom of the table.
