The prevailing narrative in Silicon Valley is that Chinese AI models like Kimi K3 and DeepSeek R1 came out of nowhere. But the truth is that even if you never travel to China, there’s an easy way to get a sense of what Chinese AI researchers are up to: log on to X.

In the past year, I’ve seen a steady increase of Chinese artificial intelligence researchers joining X and participating in the wider discourse about AI development and commercialization. Take Moonshot AI, the company behind Kimi K3, as an example. On Thursday, I was able to quickly find around 30 accounts on X run by people who claim to be currently affiliated with Moonshot, including two of the startup’s cofounders, as well as half a dozen former employees and collaborators. And these are not dormant accounts: They talk about Moonshot’s big releases and incremental research papers, make friends with Western researchers, and share details about their personal life and hobbies.

Moonshot is arguably the Chinese AI lab that’s most active on X, but you will easily find executives and technical staff from other leading Chinese startups, like Minimax and Z.ai. Even several employees at DeepSeek, who reportedly are unable to leave China because the government confiscated their passports, regularly post on X about the latest AI news and share job listings to recruit new talent.

“X is the best community” for AI discussions right now, says Meng Fanqing, cofounder of the startup Evolvent AI and a former intern at Moonshot, where he worked on the Kimi K2.5 model. “There are both Chinese and overseas audiences, and the recommendation algorithm works pretty well for showing you content in the same circle that you are in,” he says. Compared with Chinese platforms, where it’s often hard to have serious technical discussions, Chinese researchers like Meng say they would rather spend their time on X.

Meng says he started actively posting on X in mid-2025. At the start of the year, DeepSeek’s R1 model went viral around the world, shining a bright spotlight on China’s AI industry. Many Chinese researchers seized the moment and joined X to start sharing their perspective. “Around that time, all the Chinese researchers are starting to think about branding on an international level,” Meng says.

Chinese AI researchers may also be helping fill a growing gap left by researchers at OpenAI and Anthropic, who have become more reluctant to share their thinking online as their employers have grown into behemoth companies, says Tiezhen Wang, an independent AI analyst and former researcher at Hugging Face. “I guess they feel that their model architecture and how they train the model is kind of a secret, so they’re posting less,” Wang explains. As a result, Chinese researchers are getting more attention from audiences on X who are hungry to make sense of what’s happening in the fast-moving world of AI.

Why Choose X?

One reason X may have become popular among Chinese AI researchers is that there’s not really a comparable social platform in China for high-quality technical discussions about AI and other emerging technologies.

Some people say they used to post on Zhihu, a Quora-like platform that once branded itself as the premier destination for educated professionals to show and tell. But since 2020, Zhihu has increasingly pivoted to hosting fiction content, and expert contributors have gradually fallen off. For example, Deng Yu, a Chinese mathematician who was awarded a Fields Medal this year, publicly wrote on Zhihu in 2018 that he decided to stop posting on the site due to the rise of low-quality content.

Amaal did not stop there. He accused Tanishk of using paid PR against him, claiming, “Paid PR ka paisa tum label se kama chuke ho, but kharach galat jagah kar rahe ho.” He also alleged that rival groups within the film industry were attempting to damage the prospects of his upcoming project Awarapan 2.

The public outburst comes days after Tanishk Bagchi alleged that he had not received Rs. 8 lakhs in royalty payments for the title track of Saiyaara. Amaal used the controversy to question why Tanishk was targeting Yash Raj Films despite frequently claiming that T-Series owed him crores. He wrote, “You keep saying @TSeries owes you crores, then why go after #YashRajFilms, kyunki Bhushan Ji Music Industry mein bohot strong hold rakhte hai?”

In his lengthy post, Amaal also alleged that Tanishk secured ‘Saiyaara’ by taking a song originally created by Faheem Abdullah and Arsalan Nizami. He claimed, “If I speak up about how you bagged the film #Saiyaara, and stole the song right under Faheem Abdullah & Arsalan Nizami’s nose to make Mohit Suri take you in the film, then you will know.”

The composer further alleged that the song ‘Saiyaara’ was copied from ‘Humnawa Mere’ and claimed singer Jubin Nautiyal chose to remain silent because of his professional association with the film. He also accused Tanishk of copying Pakistani songs, lifting folk melodies and taking inspiration from YouTube covers, writing, “You’re a bloody thief, your originals are also not originals.”

Amaal did not stop there. He accused Tanishk of using paid PR against him, claiming, “Paid PR ka paisa tum label se kama chuke ho, but kharach galat jagah kar rahe ho.” He also alleged that rival groups within the film industry were attempting to damage the prospects of his upcoming project Awarapan 2.

Earlier this week, Amaal had thanked fans for the positive response to his latest song and urged listeners to let the music grow over time. “Thank you for such a brilliant response to a melody that’s the closest to my heart. Every song needs time to breathe, be taken into the system and then reach and live in the heart of the audience,” he wrote.

He further claimed that a “huge paid PR” campaign was being orchestrated by rival elements in the industry to affect both the film and its soundtrack. “There is a huge paid PR being run by rival elements of the film industry that don’t want the film or soundtrack to do well,” Amaal alleged, adding that such attempts would ultimately fail because audiences decide the fate of music.

Ending his strongly worded post with a warning, Amaal wrote, “Don’t mess with me, because this is my jungle, and there’s only one rule here. When the lion is hungry, he eats and leaves no crumbs.” As of now, Tanishk Bagchi has not publicly responded to Amaal Mallik’s allegations.

Diego primarily used the burner account to bookmark and like solo content and masturbation videos, and never posted. But when he logged in to X over the weekend, he was notified that the account had been suspended.

Beginning this month, X has escalated its efforts to crack down on automated accounts. The company’s head of product, Nikita Bier, noted that the platform was flagging and suspending bots at a rapid pace—“208 bots per minute and growing,” he posted on April 9. But the large-scale campaign, which is intended to remove fake, inactive, or spam accounts in bulk, has also led to the suspension and deletion of accounts used by humans—including many used to privately curate niche porn.

The company has a policy against “inauthentic activity that undermines the integrity of X,” meaning private accounts that people used to repost or lurk were likely identified as spam trying to juice engagement.

While it is unclear how many actual bots have been wiped from the platform since early April—X did not respond to multiple requests for comment—the purge has been catastrophic for users who have long used their secret accounts, commonly called “alts,” to watch and archive their favorite porn. (My alt account, which I created in 2021 during the height of the pandemic, was also nuked over the weekend).

“Not a single rule was violated mind you, years of curation and accumulation gone in a flash for no reason,” posted Tom Zohar, an actor based in San Diego. “The burning of the library of Alexandria’s got nothing on this tragedy.”

“6 yr old goon acc is suspended this cannot be real,” wrote another user.

“Sometimes people just need a page that’s specifically for them to engage with content they don’t want other people to know they’re into. That doesn’t make you a bot; that makes you human, actually,” Diego tells WIRED.

Though seemingly random, this most recent purge is part of an ongoing initiative by X. In October, Bier’s team scrubbed 1.7 million bots in an effort to reduce reply spam, with plans to focus on DM spam next. In the weeks leading up to April, Bier explained that “nearly half of the product team” had shifted its focus to improving X’s “spam mitigation features,” prioritizing bot detection systems and automated enforcement.
