The Summer I Turned Pretty is our latest zeitgeist obsession this summer, so it’s expected that everyone would be talking about each episode as they release with such intensity. Our latest fiasco for the Cousins Beach gang is that Jeremiah Fisher has proposed to Belly Conklin, which has most of the internet — especially Team Conrad truthers — reeling.

And since there are already many skeptics and fanatics debating the legitimacy of this Belly and Jeremiah’s relationship, what really has the internet ablaze is, well, the size of the ring. Was it already a little morally gray for Jeremiah to propose to Belly outside of the hospital where her brother laid unconscious due to a car accident, after cheating on her twice? Absolutely! So now, the size of said ring, that looks suspiciously tinier than a traditional engagement ring, of course has the internet reeling. In what was meant to be a romantic climax, fans couldn’t help but zero in on the delicate band and diamond that screamed jewelry stacking pieces rather than lifelong commitment. (Reviews on the Catbird ring’s page do indeed recommend it for stacking.)

Twitter, TikTok, and every corner of the fandom lit up with memes: reaction pics, comments about not being able to see the ring when she holds her hand up, and more than a few jokes about how Jeremiah clearly doesn’t have the financial means to make such a purchase.

With this declaration of love, many viewers are insisting that “Conrad would never,” which maybe is the point. This tiny ring potentially was supposed to reflect Jeremiah’s impulsive nature. And also a reflection of his now deepening debt.

Either way, the ring’s legacy now lives online in meme form: immortalized as one of the most unserious serious TV proposals Gen Z has ever witnessed. But, Belly if you like it, we love it!
