It may not have matched the $200 million opening club like its predecessor, but “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” kept the box office booming. The Universal Studios, Illumination, and Nintendo production pulled in $188 million over its first five days, including $12x million for the Easter weekend frame. That’s the biggest opening to date and the largest opening since another Universal release, “Wicked for Good,” took in $147 million in November. Globally, “Super Mario Galaxy” overperformed expectations with $182.4 million overseas and a worldwide cume of $372 million so far.
The first installment in the franchise, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” earned $204 million over its first five days and $146.3 million over the comparable three-day holiday weekend. It went on to gross $1.3 billion worldwide. Despite terrible critics’ reviews, fans seem down with the sequel, giving it an A- CinemaScore grade. Universal no doubt hopes the fandom fuels it to another $1 billion plus global tally. It has an excellent shot with no real family competition until “The Mandalorian & Grogu” opens on Memorial Day, although that’s a debatable genre comparison, and “Toy Story 5” drops in the middle of June. At a reported $110 million production budget, “Super Mario Galaxy” is already a major money maker for all three companies behind the animated flick.
Dropping to second place with a 43% drop was“Project Hail Mary,” which took in another $30 million to hit $217 million domestic. Worldwide, the Amazon MGM Studios release is now at $420.1 million. With IMAX promising to put the breakout back on screens in the weeks ahead, a final tally of over $550 million seems assured at this point.
Opening in fourth was the Zenaya and Robert Pattinson “not really a romantic drama” drama, “The Drama” with $14.3 million. This is on par with another Zendaya release, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers,” that opened to $15 milllion two years ago. A24 and its partners opened day and date in a ton of global markets, including France and the UK, for a worldwide cume or $28 million so far. The production budget is reported to be $25-28 million, but A24 sells off some international markets, so the cost for the mini-major itself is less.
Many have tried to compare “The Drama’s” potential box office run to a surprise summer hit, “The Materialists,” but that may be slightly off base. That romantic drama was sold as a romantic comedy and arguably had no genre competition at the box office. “The Drama” has a slightly better CinemaScore at a B grade vs. “Materialists” B-, but has competition in the weeks from its own distributor debuts “Mother Mary,” with Anne Hathaway, on April 17.
“Hoppers” dropped to fourth and now has skipped to $149.6 million domestic and $332 milion worldwide.
The other new release this weekend was the faith-based period piece “A Great Awakening.” Distributed by Roadside Attractions, the Sight & Sound production pulled in just $2.1 million on 1,289 screens for a good $1,639 per screen. At a reported $13 million budget, a public figure thanks to public Pennsylvania tax credits notices, it’s got a long way to go to break even.
New releases on Friday include “You, Me & Tuscany” and “Faces of Death.”
