Hollywood is grieving the loss of Robert Redford, who recently passed away.

Beyond his career as one of the greatest actors and filmmakers of his generation, Redford was known for his extraordinary bond with fellow screen legend Paul Newman.

Their friendship began in front of the cameras but grew into a brotherhood filled with pranks, support, and mutual respect. Now, Newman’s family is reflecting on the timeless relationship that defined both men’s lives.

Paul’s daughter, Nell Newman, described her father’s friendship with Redford as one that started in the spotlight but grew into something deeper.

“They had two great movies together, and that was a really strong bond,” she said to PEOPLE, pointing to their legendary work in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”.

The two heartthrobs captured audiences with their effortless chemistry, but away from the cameras, the connection only grew stronger.

Nell explained that Redford became a key influence on her father, especially when it came to his passion for the environment.

“I think he was also a real catalyst in Dad’s interest in environmental issues because Bob was already ahead of the game,” she shared.

To Paul’s family, this was more than friendship; it was mentorship. Redford wasn’t just a costar; he was a grounding force and sounding board who shaped Paul’s views in meaningful ways.

Nell recalled their “buddy-movie friendship built on pranks and mutual respect.”

One story that still makes her laugh was the time Redford gifted her dad a dented, engine-less Porsche as a birthday joke.

Paul returned the favor by having the car crushed and sent back to Redford, proof that their banter never lost its spark.

For Nell, the bond was personal, too. She remembered how the 89-year-old helped her when she graduated from college by connecting her with leaders at major environmental organizations like the NRDC and Environmental Defense Fund.

“He was so warm and helpful at that particular time in my life,” she said.

Whether it was inviting the Newman family to Sundance or offering career advice, Redford’s generosity left a lasting mark. “He was just a good one,” Nell added fondly.

Unfortunately, Paul passed away at age 83 in September 2008 after a long battle with cancer.

According to a statement from publicist Jeff Sanderson at the time, the icon died at his farmhouse near Westport, Conn, surrounded by his family and close friends.

For Robert Redford, the death of his beloved friend was a bitter pill to swallow.

Speaking about tragedy, he revealed in a statement, “There is a point where feeling go beyond words.”

He described the actor as a “real friend,” adding that both his own life and the country were better because Paul had been in it.

Following his demise, Redford remained connected to the family, keeping the bond alive.

Although Paul’s death was one of the most difficult things Redford dealt with, it couldn’t compare to the grief he faced following the death of his third-oldest child, James.

According to an insider, the Oscar award winner never healed from the tragedy.

“There was an intense sadness to him after his son died a few years ago…Bob talked about how much he missed his son; it was a heartbreaking thing for him,” they revealed per The Daily Mail.
