Time Is Running Out for Audiences To Stream Jason Momoa’s 92% ‘Shōgun’ Replacement

Jason Momoa is no stranger to a passion project. The Game of Thrones star has proven time and time again that he doesn’t just have what it takes to shine in front of the camera, but can steer the production from behind the scenes as well. In 2025, he dug deep into his roots and followed in the footsteps of his ancestors through the Apple TV show, Chief of War. A co-creation between Momoa and Thomas Paʻa Sibbett, the nine-episode series became an instant hit for the streamer, garnering a 92% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences tuning in by the droves to travel back through time with Momoa and a long list of top tier performers. Sadly, time is running out for Peacock subscribers to stream the Apple TV original as it will take its leave of the NBCUniversal platform on February 1.

Transporting audiences back to the 18th century, Chief of War follows the all out war between Hawai’i, Maui, O’ahu, and Kaua’i. While many in his community have never left their home, Ka’iana (Momoa), has ventured away from the islands and has seen the oftentimes horrific realities of the outside world. With this knowledge, he brings fresh insight to the four warring kingdoms as they set their sights on declaring one overall ruler. As the kingdoms brawl against one another, an outside force threatens to destroy them all unless they come together in unity.

There are plenty of things that make Chief of War stand out from other productions released in 2025. For starters, the sweeping cinematography and gorgeous shots of the Hawaiian landscape are sure to hook audiences — especially during these cooler winter months. The story is also taken straight from the history books, centering on the war that took place between the years of 1782 and 1810. Finally, Momoa and the rest of the star-studded cast pour their hearts and souls into the project, which features supporting performances from Luciane Buchanan (The Night Agent), Temuera Morrison (The Book of Boba Fett), James Udom (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Benjamin Hoetjes (Mystery Road), Cliff Curtis (Avatar: Fire and Ash), and more.

What’s Next for Jason Momoa?

Moving back to feature-length productions, this year will be a major one for Momoa, who will soon be spotted alongside Dave Bautista in Prime Video’s buddy cop comedy, The Wrecking Crew. Throughout the rest of the year, he’ll also be featured in Peter Atencio’s comedy, Animal Friends; cross from DC hero to villain in Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl; jump into video game lore via Kitao Sakurai’s live-action Street Fighter adaptation; and return to the sandy world of Arrakis in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three.

Check out Chief of War on Peacock before it leaves on February 1.
