Why There’s A Brown-Haired Targaryen In The A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Trailer

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will introduce a new Targaryen prince, but this one has brown hair instead of silver. A new trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms recently dropped, and it’s given fans a better look at the cast of Westerosi characters we can expect to meet when the show premieres in January 2026.

We get to see more of Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) in this trailer, particularly concerning his relationship with the highborn of Westeros. One character he speaks to in the trailer treats him with a bit more respect than the rest, despite being a Targaryen, a fact you may have missed considering his brown hair.

Baelor Targaryen Has Brown Hair In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Because Of His Dornish Ancestry

In the December 4, 2025, trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Duncan “Dunk” is called to action by Baeloer “Breakspear” Targaryen, played by Bertie Carvel, who wants to know how good a knight Dunk is. Knowing Baelor from the novellas, he’s not taunting Dunk; he’s trying to determine if he’s a knightly man, honorable as well as deadly.

Prince Baleor is the eldest son of Daeron II Targaryen, the king of Westeros in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Baelor’s mother is Myriah Martell, and he is one of the few Targaryens to favor their non-Targaryen parent. Like Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) in Game of Thrones, Myriah and Baelor are dark of skin, hair, and eyes.

Baelor is the very image of a prince, strong, tall, and handsome, as many Targaryens are, but he certainly looks a lot like a Martell, too. He doesn’t just look like a prince either; he’s often regarded as one of the most noble men in Westeros, and many look forward to seeing him take the throne once his father passes.

Silver Hair Has Always Been Seen As An Example Of Targaryen Exceptionalism

Even someone as noble and respected as Baelor has his detractors, however, and Baelor’s often point to his brown hair as a sign of being unfit to rule. In the time period of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Dorne has only recently come into the fold, thanks to Daeron II marrying Myriah.

So a lot of houses in Westeros are wary of the Dornish. Their customs are different, their views on sexuality and the woman’s role are much more progressive, and they are very warlike, the only one of the Seven Kingdoms not to be conquered. So some whisper that Baelor is more Martell than Targaryen.

This isn’t the first time brown hair has led to a Targaryen being distrusted. In House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra’s children all have brown hair, leading many to secretly refer to them as bastards. Silver hair has long been a sign of Targaryen exceptionalism, and in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, that maxim still holds.
