After their acclaimed stint together in the two Wicked films, which also received a strong global response, it appears that Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey are not done collaborating. The pair are set to work together once again in a West End revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize–winning 1984 musical, Sunday in the Park with George.
Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey joins cast of West End revival of iconic musical
After months of speculation, with Deadline first reporting the revival in December, it has now been confirmed that Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey are reuniting for a West End revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical, Sunday in the Park with George.
Widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed musicals of its era, Sunday in the Park with George won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, two Tony Awards for design, several Drama Desk Awards, the 1991 Olivier Award for Best Musical, and the 2007 Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production. The musical has also seen several successful revivals over the years.
Following early rumors suggesting a return in 2027, Grande and Bailey shared a joint social media post showing the two seated at The Art Institute of Chicago in front of Georges Seurat’s iconic painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, which inspired the musical. The caption read, “All it has to be is good,” referencing the show’s title song.
Tony and Olivier Award winner Marianne Elliott, known for directing the acclaimed gender-swapped revival of Company, will helm the project.
The musical centers on painter Georges Seurat, who becomes consumed by his drive to complete what he believes will be his masterpiece. His artistic obsession ultimately distances him from those around him, including his muse and lover, Dot.
More details about the upcoming revival are expected to be announced soon.
