Will Ferrell’s ‘Ted Lasso’ Replacement at Netflix Adds a ‘Talladega Nights’ Star

Will Ferrell is set to reunite with one of his old Talladega Nights co-stars on an upcoming project in the works at Netflix. The streamer has announced that Molly Shannon, who previously played Mrs. Dennit, opposite Ferrell’s Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights, has joined the cast of Ferrell’s golf comedy series. Ferrell will play a fictional golf legend in the upcoming show, and Shannon has been tapped to star as his foul-mouthed ex-wife, Stacy. The show was announced back in May of last year, but it has undergone significant changes since its announcement. It was originally also set to star Ramy Youssef, who has since departed the project. In addition to starring opposite each other in Talladega Nights, Ferrell and Shannon also worked together on Saturday Night Live from 1996-2002.

Rian Johnson, famed for his work directing The Last Jedi and creating the Knives Out franchise, is also attached to Ferrell’s golf series as a producer. Johnson has become comfortable working with Netflix in the last few years — the streamer is the primary distributor of his Knives Out movies. It’s hard not to compare Ferrell’s golf series to Stick, the recent show that debuted on Apple TV+ earlier this year, starring Owen Wilson. Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, a former golf pro who is on the outs when he decides to take on a young protégé. Stick was well-liked by fans and critics, earning scores of 81% and 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s even been renewed for Season 2. The comparisons are going to be inevitable when Ferrell’s show begins streaming, but only time will tell which will capture the hearts of fans more.

Will Ferrell Has Another Project in the Works with Ryan Gosling

Will Ferrell has been tapped to star alongside Ryan Gosling in Tough Guys, an upcoming comedy following two criminals who are tired of their roles as henchmen and work together to escape their past. Gosling and Ferrell previously starred together in Barbie, the 2023 smash hit with Margot Robbie. Gosling has spoken openly about Step Brothers being his favorite movie, so to take John C. Reilly’s spot and feature opposite Ferrell in a buddy comedy has to be a dream come true. The film is in very early development, so additional details and casting are being kept under wraps.

It’s unclear at this time when Ferrell’s golf series will begin filming or be released. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the project.
