The Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise is extremely popular and only growing as the quality grows with each film. They’re facing one big problem, though, and that is the absence of Doctor “Eggman” Robotnik (Jim Carrey) moving forward. It’s no secret that Jim Carrey has been a major highlight of these movies over the years, so much so that many wonder if the franchise could be as good without him.
After the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, there’s a decent chance that Eggman won’t be making a comeback (who knows, though, as Carrey already came back for the third film after “quitting”), and that opens up a vacuum in the franchise that could be detrimental. While he’s always been the Blue Blur’s most consistent villain over the years, he’s still had many across video games and comic books that may just be able to solve this Eggman problem they are potentially facing moving forward, especially since director Jeff Fowler stated that they definitely plan to move forward even after Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
It’s already been confirmed via the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 post-credits scene that Metal Sonic will, in fact, be the main villain (or one of them) in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 come March 2027. While there’s a decent chance Eggman makes a comeback through Metal Sonic, because he’s his creator, even if he doesn’t, Metal Sonic can most definitely hold a film of his own.
This is even more true if he gets his Neo Metal Sonic upgrade, in which he becomes even more powerful and raises the stakes exponentially, just as he did in Sonic Heroes and the IDW comic books (he even went into a Super Neo Metal Sonic form here). More than enough times, the robot hedgehog has been able to achieve dastardly plots on his own, and most certainly could hold movie four by himself.

The Deadly Six
The Deadly Six, made up of the likes of Zavok, Master Zik, Zazz, Zeena, Zomom, and Zor, first made their appearance in Sonic Lost World for the Nintendo Wii U. While this game wasn’t necessarily received in flying colors, The Deadly Six were, well, deadly villains and would go on to become even better through the IDW comic books. When Sonic Lost World came around, they were depicted as far darker than the villains of previous years, with threats that were pretty dark for the franchise, like the quote from Zazz (Liam O’Brien), “You’re going home in a box!”
In Sonic Lost World, they are brought into the fold by Eggman, but ever since, whenever they’ve come to blows with Sonic in the comics, they’ve acted pretty much on their own. So, this doesn’t kill the possibility of The Deadly Six acting alone for a future Sonic the Hedgehog film. Not to mention, they are multiple villains, which could make for even more of a challenge for Sonic and friends than anything they’ve faced up until this point.

The Babylon Rogues
It’s always a ton of fun when there’s a villain that challenges Sonic’s speed. First brought to the franchise in the video game Sonic Riders, The Babylon Rogues find their speed through technology called Extreme Gear, which are basically just high-powered hoverboards. While in Sonic Riders, Sonic (Jason Griffith) rides an Extreme Gear of his own (out of fairness?), the technology could easily be adjusted for the movies to make the gear potentially fast enough to actually rival the hedgehog’s speed.
The Extreme Gear is a piece of technology from the games that is a certified fan favorite. Seeing hoverboards go up against Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in the films could be a super dynamic sight to see. Not to mention, the leader of the Rogues, Jet the Hawk, has always acted as a great parallel to Sonic, being someone obsessed with speed and being “the fastest”. This opens up the chance for a very interesting character arc for Sonic in a future film.

Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec
Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec are villains that are exclusive to the IDW comic book franchise. While they may not be as marketable to audiences because of their lack of appearances in the video games, there is a lot of potential storytelling-wise for these two characters. The first big story arc featuring them in Sonic the Hedgehog (2018) was a wildly compelling one that actually served as a great moment to show off the kind of hero Sonic the Hedgehog really is.
These two have a great parallel with Sonic and Tails, and their first encounter together gave space for some great characterization for Sonic, talking about the freedom of life. As Sonic grows as a character, an arc like this could be really cool to see for movie Sonic in the future. Their power sets would be very unique compared to previous villains, with Surge able to manipulate electricity and Kitsunami being able to manipulate water.
6
Doctor Starline
Another Sonic comic book exclusive character is none other than Doctor Starline. First appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog #11 (2018), Doctor Starline would come to be a Doctor Eggman-esque figure, which could fit the Sonic the Hedgehog movies perfectly. If they’re going to lose Doctor Eggman, bringing in Starline could be a nice change of pace for the series while keeping an Eggman-like character in the mix.
Doctor Starline could offer a nice mix-up of the nature vs. technology themes of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, being an animal creature prioritizing technology like Eggman did. Starline becoming an ongoing villain could provide a lot of great elements to the series. Like Surge and Kit, it’d be hard to market him, but thanks to him being a less physically dangerous character, he could be manipulating and pulling the strings behind a more popular villain that would physically fight the hegdehog.
5
Mephiles the Dark
While the 2006 game, Sonic the Hedgehog—also called Sonic ’06—is known as one of the worst video games of all time, it had a pretty cool concept of a villain that was wasted potential. Mephiles the Dark (Dan Green) was a creature who was born of the god Solaris during the “Solaris Project”, in which humans were testing on the god and accidentally split him into two halves: Mephiles and Iblis.
His main goal was to reunite with Iblis and become Solaris once more. Although the plot of Sonic ’06 was horrendously convoluted, the idea behind Mephiles had a lot of potential, and could be redone in a movie and made even better. He’s one of the only villains in the entire franchise who has actually murdered Sonic, and is extremely powerful on his own. People have actually been calling for the movies to bring in Silver the Hedgehog and potentially do Sonic ’06, but better, so this is a perfect opportunity.
4
Black Doom
This villain is much more of a Shadow enemy, being the main antagonist of both the Shadow the Hedgehog video game and Shadow’s (Jason Griffith) story in Sonic X Shadow Generations. He was part of the creation of Shadow, and with how Sonic the Hedgehog 3 showed off his origin, it looks like the same is true in the movie universe, as if Black Doom (Sean Schemmel) alone created him.
There’s a bigger chance that he appears as the villain of a Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves) solo project, but he could easily be the villain of a main franchise movie, as he threatens the fate of the entire world whenever he arrives. Black Doom is one of the most dangerous villains in the entire franchise, and he commands an entire alien army called the Black Arms. An alien invasion is not something that Sonic and friends have faced before, so this could provide an opportunity for a wild conflict in a future movie.
3
Scourge the Hedgehog
Way back in the early days of Sonic’s time at Archie Comics, the character known as Scourge the Hedgehog was introduced. Via the multiverse, an evil variant of Sonic came to the mainline universe and caused a boatload of trouble for the main cast. Scourge is an embodiment of Sonic’s character flaws and generally negative qualities, making him the perfect foil. He conquered his entire planet with his power.
Characters like Shadow have always criticized the blue hedgehog for the restraint he holds for his villains. He’ll never cross the line and go too far, but Scourge most certainly will. He actually loves to do it. Having a Sonic who won’t hold back would make for an extremely dangerous foe that could change everything for the franchise, especially if he poses as Sonic and convinces the public that he is him as he does terrible things.
2
Chaos
While Doctor Eggman (Deem Bristow) may have been controlling Chaos at the beginning of the creature’s first appearance in Sonic Adventure, the bad doctor is not needed for a Chaos plot in the slightest. The Master Emerald is already an incredibly important object in the movie universe, so Chaos, who is born from it, isn’t a far jump for a new villain.
The mass amount of, well, chaos and destruction that this villain causes is profoundly extreme. The third act of Sonic Adventure being adapted to film would be nuts. It would truly up the stakes in a way no Sonic the Hedgehog movie has before, and make whatever movie the creature is in a true blockbuster event.
1
Dark Gaia
Dark Gaia is another villain that may have been incited by Doctor Eggman, but the doctor isn’t needed for it. All a movie needs to make this monstrous demon come out is breaking the world apart. The plot of Sonic Unleashed is super fun and is globe-trotting. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies are already worldwide adventures, especially in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but adapting Sonic Unleashed would give Jeff Fowler and the team the chance to truly travel the world.
Traveling the planet in a future Sonic film would give the filmmakers the chance to expand the world and introduce new characters and concepts. The stakes of the Sonic Unleashed plot are also some of the highest in the entire series. The world is literally split into pieces; it doesn’t get much more blockbuster than that. Who needs Eggman when the team needs to piece the world back together?
