You’re officially leaving the nest and heading off to your freshman year of college, away from your home, your bedroom, and your family. Packing for your first year of dorm life is a big deal and you need a college shopping list that’s comprehensive. You may know this already, but just in case, we’ve got a few tips for items that can be easy to miss.
Even if your college of choice is close to the family home, you probably won’t be there that often when you’re living in a dorm (or your first off-campus apartment), so you want to make your space feel as comfortable and home-like as possible. And that means double- and triple-checking the packing list to make sure you’ve got all the essentials at the ready.
You may have written the most exhaustive dorm shopping list, but a few little things might still get left off said list or just forgotten at home. Instead of stressing and scurrying to the campus bookstore, where they’ll overcharge you for a portable charger or umbrella when you need it most, plan ahead and pack smart. Future you will be so thankful!
Ahead, we’ve rounded up some of the little things that make a big difference as you settle in at school, including the stuff you should keep close at hand as you unpack and start decorating your dorm.
Sunscreen
You won’t have a parent around to remind you to apply sunscreen day in and day out while you’re at college, so don’t forget to pack an SPF for your face and another for your body. This way you can stay protected while walking to class or hanging out on the quad.
Umbrella
Never be unprepared for an unexpected rainstorm again! A cute, colorful, printed umbrella does double-duty as weather protection and an accessory, and it can be tucked into your backpack on those “just in case” cloudy days. We love the cheeky Peanuts print of this sky-blue style.
