Mirra Andreeva claimed a battling 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win in the first round of the Stuttgart Open on Wednesday to eliminate reigning champion Jelena Ostapenko.
After winning the 500-level event in Linz last week, the world number nine has started her clay-court season in fine fettle.
Andreeva raced into a 2-0 lead in the round of 32 match in Germany, before Ostapenko clawed back level.
But the 18-year-old immediately regained the initiative by breaking in the fifth game to edge ahead once more.
The Russian creaked at the last though as back-to-back double faults when serving for the opening set at 5-4 and deuce let Ostapenko back in.
Ostapenko took full advantage of that reprieve by winning the next two games to claim the set, sealing the deal with a brutal cross-court backhand winner on Andreeva’s serve.
Andreeva hit back by breaking the Latvian in the third game of the second frame.
Despite another untimely double fault at deuce when serving for the set, Andreeva held her nerve this time to hold and force a decider.
After exchanging breaks early in the third set, Andreeva pounced on Ostapenko’s serve to get ahead 5-4 as she claimed victory in her first-ever meeting with the 2017 Roland Garros champion.
She will next face Alycia Parks, after the American defeated home hope Noma Noha Akugue in straight sets.
Earlier, fifth seed Jasmine Paolini collapsed to a first-round 6-2, 6-2 defeat against world number 79 Zeynep Sonmez.
Iga Swiatek, the 2022 and 2023 Stuttgart champion, begins her campaign in the second round against Laura Siegemund later Wednesday, before fourth seed Elina Svitolina meets Eva Lys, also in the round of 16.

Apr 14, 2026; Los Angeles, California, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers two-way player Shohei Ohtani (17) steps on to the mound after the game against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Two days after he was hit by a fastball in the right shoulder, Shohei Ohtani will test any residual soreness when he takes the mound against the visiting New York Mets on Wednesday night.
Ohtani (1-0, 0.00 ERA), a right-handed pitcher, will make his third start of the season and first in a week after he gave up an unearned run on four hits over six innings against the Toronto Blue Jays in a no-decision.
Ohtani’s two strikeouts were his lowest in an outing of at least four innings in his MLB career. The Dodgers ended up losing 4-3 for their only loss on a six-game road trip.
“For players, we usually feel fatigue at the end of the road trip,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “I’m not sure if that was the main cause (for a low strikeout total), but I want to make sure that I’m addressing, if any, some mechanical changes.”
On Monday against the Mets, while serving as the Dodgers’ designated hitter, Ohtani was hit on the back of the shoulder by a 94-mph sinker from left-hander David Peterson.
Ohtani remained in the game, with manager Dave Roberts saying afterward that he might have been concerned if Ohtani had to pitch Tuesday but that a bruise would not be an issue.
Ohtani will pitch against the Mets for the first time in his career. New York has lost seven straight games.
In consecutive Dodgers victories over the Mets this week, Ohtani was handed a blueprint for how to handle the New York lineup. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski and right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto each pitched into the eighth inning as Los Angeles won for the ninth time in 11 games.
The Mets will counter Wednesday with right-hander Clay Holmes (2-1,1.50 ERA), who has given up one total run over his past two starts (12 1/3 innings) but is just 1-1 to show for it. He took the loss in a 4-0 home defeat against the Athletics on Friday when he gave up one run on five hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Holmes’ outing was cut short because of left hamstring tightness, but he threw his regular between-start bullpen session on Monday.
“There was just kind of a weird feeling and some unsureness about what was going on,” Holmes said. “I think (we) just made the smart decision to not make it worse.”
In eight career appearances (one start) against the Dodgers, Holmes is 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA. The start came in 2018 when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
With the offense in a funk, and the team on a losing streak, the Mets will need Holmes to be at his best. New York has just one run over the past three games, and it came on Francisco Lindor’s leadoff home run Tuesday. The Dodgers then squeezed out a 2-1 victory.
“The urgency level is really high,” Lindor said afterward. “I don’t think (anybody) here is desperate, but we understand we have to win. It’s a must-win. … Everybody here has a sense of urgency. We’re all trying to win. It’s just a matter of time. We have to get it done. Everyone understands the task is winning.”
It was not only Lindor’s first home run of the season, it was his first RBI. He has scored 11 times.
New York outfielder Jared Young was a late lineup scratch Tuesday because of left knee discomfort.

The numbers are in, and the NBA says Year 1 of its new television deals were a hit.
The league released numbers for the regular season on Wednesday, showing that 170 million people in the U.S. watched NBA games across the league’s four primary broadcast platforms this year — those being ABC/ ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, NBC/ Peacock, and NBA TV.
Those numbers are the league’s best in 24 years, the NBA said, representing an 86 per cent rise over last season.
Prime Video was part of the league’s television rights package for the first time this season and NBC/ Peacock returned for the first time in a generation. The league signed a new 11-year, USD 76 billion-plus media rights deal in 2024 to show games on those two platforms along with ABC/ ESPN and NBA TV.
Those deals kicked in at the start of this season.
NBA games across ABC/ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, NBC/Peacock and NBA TV had the the highest average viewership in 13 years, up 35 per cent over last season.
A total of 57 telecasts this season reached an average of 2 million viewers, the most since the 2011-12 season.
People watched NBA games for more than 920 million hours, up 25 per cent over last season and the most since 2011-12.
The NBA’s social media channels generated a record 228 billion views this season, according to Videocites. That’s up 13 per cent over last season.
Attendance over the past three seasons in NBA arenas is higher than any three-season span in league history.
Viewership for NBA Cup group play games was up 90 per cent from last season.
The audience for the All-Star Game on NBC, averaging 8.8 million viewers, was the largest for the league’s midseason showcase event since 2011.

Apr 6, 2024; Miami, Florida, USA; The LIV Golf logo is on display along the 10th hole during the second round of LIV Golf Miami golf tournament at Trump National Doral. Mandatory Credit: Reinhold Matay-Imagn Images Speculation over the future of LIV Golf ran rampant after league executives reportedly were summoned to New York for an emergency summit on Wednesday.
One report said to expect a “bombshell announcement” and suggested that the Saudi-backed circuit could be on the verge of financial collapse.
“I have some pretty good sources and I’ve heard that some other people have sources that LIV is shutting down,” said golf reporter Ryan French of the X account Monday Q Info, which has nearly 200,000 followers.
Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee also predicted the end of LIV Golf, which launched in 2022 with lucrative contracts for former PGA Tour stars such as Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson.
“Given that the product was so ill-conceived and ended up being worse than anyone could have imagined,” Chamblee posted on X. “With shotgun starts, initially 54 holes, a team concept that was nothing but laughable and tournaments that meant and continue to mean nothing, and such a paltry number of viewers, losing billions along the way — would it surprise anyone if the Saudis came to their corrupted senses and finally euthanized the whole lame-brained tour.”
Conflicting reports said LIV Golf was not experiencing outward financial problems.
“I’ve spoken directly to multiple people within LIV Golf who all say they have had no issue with being paid,” Flushing It Golf posted on X. “Future venues are proceeding as normal, with no indication that anything will change. And players are getting ready to tee it up in today’s pro am, fully expecting LIV Golf Mexico City to go ahead as planned.”
The LIV Golf Mexico City tournament is set to begin on Thursday. There are nine events remaining on the schedule for the 2026 season.
