Apr 16, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo (58) throws a pitch during the sixth inning against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: David Frerker-Imagn Images A bullpen, like an umpiring crew, often goes unnoticed unless it makes mistakes.
The Seattle Mariners would like to challenge that approach. Seattle has enjoyed one of the best bullpens in baseball as of late, and it hopes the trend will continue as it faces the Minnesota Twins to kick off a three-game series Monday in Minneapolis.
The Mariners are coming off a 3-2 road win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. Seattle’s bullpen combined to pitch three scoreless innings, and Jose A. Ferrer closed the door in the ninth inning for his first save.
Seattle manager Dan Wilson said he was fortunate to have a top bullpen.
“We’ve got guys we trust in those spots,” Wilson said. “And they just continue to do the job.”
The Mariners have won four games in a row and six of their past eight.
Minnesota is careening in the opposite direction and hopes to stop its skid as it opens a seven-game homestand. The Twins are coming off a 4-2 road loss against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday that marked the team’s fifth loss in a row and its ninth loss in the past 10 games.
Twins manager Derek Shelton wants his young team to focus on its next game instead of worrying about the past 10 contests.
“We’re going through a tough funk,” Shelton said. “We have to stay on the course. We have to stay positive. It seemed like early in the season, we were capitalizing on everything. Right now, we’re not capitalizing. We need to flip the switch.”
Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo (0-1, 5.01 ERA) will try to prevent that from happening. Castillo remains in search of his first victory heading into his sixth start of the season, but he has fanned 23 in 23 1/3 innings.
Castillo recorded a quality start in his season debut but has not pitched six innings in any of his past four outings. In his last start Tuesday against the Athletics, he allowed two runs on five hits in five innings.
This will be Castillo’s 10th career start against the Twins. In his first nine contests, he is 1-2 with a 4.82 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings.
Minnesota will counter with left-hander Connor Prielipp, who is set to make the second start of his career. He made his big-league debut on Wednesday and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings against the New York Mets. He struck out six and didn’t issue a walk.
Prielipp, 25, began his career on the road and will start in front of his hometown fans for the first time. He is from Tomah, Wis., which is about 175 miles from the Twin Cities.
The rookie hurler will try to silence Cal Raleigh, who belted his sixth home run on Sunday afternoon. Raleigh is hitting .204 with 15 RBIs on the season.
Raleigh, who finished as the runner-up in the American League MVP vote last season, deflected praise to his teammates in the bullpen.
“They’re a massive part of this team,” Raleigh said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are.”

Everything hinges on the upcoming college football season to determine which quarterback will be taken No. 1 overall. We know it’s likely between Dante Moore and Arch Manning, but right now it’s a total tossup between the two. When the dust settles the biggest prize of this class might not be a quarterback at all. Jeremiah Smith is one of the best, most polished receivers we’ve seen in a long time and he is a transformative talent at WR.
One of the things that really stands out about the 2027 class is both its incredible strength at QB and WR, but also an astonishing lack of depth on the offensive line. There isn’t a single interior offensive lineman worth of a first round pick, and that could change a lot — but right now this is not looking like a good draft to need line help. Similarly it’s weak on the edge compared to 2026, which means teams will need to look deeper for trait-based pass rushers, rather than find a lot of finished products.
Let’s dive into the full mock for the 1st round of the 2027 NFL Draft. Draft order is based on reverse Super Bowl odds at the time of publication.

It’s never too early for an NFL Mock Draft. Okay, talking about 2027 already might be too early — but who cares, because this gives us a chance to look ahead to one of the most-hyped QB groups in recent memory.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is certain Mohamed Salah will get the send-off his glittering career deserves, even if injury prevents the Egyptian from playing again for the Reds.
Salah, who will leave Anfield after nine years at the end of the season, was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.
Liverpool is awaiting the results of a scan to determine the extent of the problem, but with just four games of the campaign remaining, the 33-year-old may not feature again this season.
“If you get injured at this stage of the season, especially in the situation he is in, there is only two more home games left for him, it’s a combination of feelings that go through your mind,” said Van Dijk.

“He will get the send-off regardless. I don’t think that is the thing at this point, we shouldn’t think too far ahead.
“Knowing Mo, he is a quick healer and with the right people around him, let’s see.”
Salah has scored 257 goals in 440 appearances since his arrival in 2017, behind only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt in Liverpool’s list of leading goalscorers.
The winger has been integral to the club’s rise back to the top of English and European football, winning the Champions League and two Premier League titles among a clutch of trophies.
Salah also scooped the players’ Player of the Year award a record three times and was the Premier League’s top-scorer on four occasions.

Apr 11, 2026; St. Louis, Missouri, USA; Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Ranger Suarez (55) pitches against the St. Louis Cardinals during the first inning at Busch Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images Boston Red Sox players have been more than open about their feelings behind the organization’s decision to fire manager Alex Cora and five members of the coaching staff Saturday.
An unpopular choice made by the front office could spark an early-season turnaround, though, as Boston has won back-to-back games entering the opener of a three-game series Monday against the host Toronto Blue Jays.
After a 10-17 start, Cora was canned. The Red Sox, although many bothered by the choice, added another victory Sunday, a 5-3 series-clinching win over the host Baltimore Orioles in Chad Tracy’s debut as interim manager.
“I was shocked by the decision. I think that’s a fair way to put it,” Boston shortstop Trevor Story said. “I think those are some of the best coaches in the world and, obviously, our performance on the field kind of cost them their job.”
Despite a rough start to the year, the Red Sox enter their third straight American League East series following a pair of impressive pitching performances. Starters Garrett Crochet and Connelly Early combined to throw 12 2/3 innings of two-run ball in the last two wins.
Hoping to prolong that stretch, Ranger Suarez (1-2, 4.00 ERA) is slated to make his sixth start in a Boston uniform. The 2024 All-Star with the Philadelphia Phillies has failed to complete five innings in three of his five starts in 2026.
Last Wednesday, the 30-year-old lefty allowed four runs in 4 2/3 frames, suffering a 4-1 home loss to the New York Yankees. Suarez, who inked a five-year, $130 million deal in January, has faced Toronto twice in his career. In his lone start against the Blue Jays, he tossed seven scoreless innings in an 8-0 victory on June 13, 2025.
Toronto, meanwhile, has won five of its previous seven and took two of three against the Cleveland Guardians over the weekend.
Following a disappointing start for the reigning AL champs, the Blue Jays appear to be turning a corner.
Offseason addition Kazuma Okamoto, who signed a four-year, $60 million contract with the club after a decade playing in Japan, homered twice against Cleveland.
“As long as I’m in that lineup every day, I just want to do my best and give it my all for this team,” said Okamoto, who leads the team with five home runs.
As the Blue Jays’ offense has kept them afloat, the pitching staff would like to match the production. Toronto’s 4.45 ERA ranks 11th in the AL.
Newcomer Dylan Cease (1-0, 2.10) hasn’t been part of the problem, however. The 30-year-old right-hander matched a season-high with 12 strikeouts in his last start, yielding two runs in five innings in a 5-2 road win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.
In six career starts against the Red Sox, Cease is 1-1 with a 6.04 ERA.

Apr 22, 2026; Arlington, Texas, USA; Texas Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter (22) throws during the first inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Globe Life Field. Mandatory Credit: Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images The New York Yankees are monitoring the status of designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton as they prepare to begin a three-game series against the Texas Rangers on Monday in Arlington, Texas.
Stanton has missed the last two games with right calf tightness, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the team will decide before Monday’s contest if a trip to the injured list is needed.
“I know (Saturday) he felt like it improved,” Boone said. “I think he also feels like he got in front of it a little bit, so we’ll see how it unfolds.”
The Yankees had their eight-game win streak snapped in a 7-4 road loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday, while Texas dropped two of three to the visiting Athletics over the weekend.
New York slugger Aaron Judge celebrated his 34th birthday on Sunday with a solo blast for his 10th homer of the season.
The Yankees later optioned starting pitcher Luis Gil to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after he allowed six runs over four-plus innings in the loss. Gil was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2024, when he posted a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts.
Left-hander Max Fried (3-1, 2.40 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees in the series opener. He allowed three hits over eight scoreless innings in a 4-1 win over the Boston Red Sox last Wednesday.
Fried, 32, struck out nine and walked two while throwing 100 pitches.
“I definitely felt more like myself,” Fried said. “I worked really well with (catcher) Austin (Wells). He made some really great calls and some good stops. And then some really good defense as well, being able to pick me up and know that I can just be on the attack.”
Brandon Nimmo is 3-for-30 (.100) and Corey Seager is 3-for-21 (.143) against Fried, who is making his second career start versus Texas. He allowed four runs over five innings in a no-decision against the Rangers on Aug. 4, 2025.
Texas will counter with right-hander Jack Leiter (1-1, 4.97), who allowed four runs (three earned) over five innings in a no-decision against the Pittsburgh Pirates last Wednesday.
“I thought Jack, the way he was throwing the baseball, was going to go seven innings, one-run type of thing,” Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said. “That’s the way he was cruising with the low pitch count, fastball was playing at the top. Then the fifth inning happened, and it got out of hand a little bit there.”
Leiter, 26, is 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees.
The Rangers have received a spark from third baseman Josh Jung, who doubled twice on Sunday and is hitting .378 (28-for-74) with four homers, 12 runs and 14 RBIs over his last 21 games.
“I’m trying to ride the wave as long as I can,” Jung said. “I think it’s just my daily discipline to be as consistent as possible and try to get my performance to be consistent.”
Jung was moved into the cleanup spot for the second time this season on Sunday, while center fielder Evan Carter hit fifth. After batting cleanup for most of the season, first baseman Jake Burger hit sixth on Sunday.
