World champion Lando Norris beamed in the Florida sunshine Friday after steering his upgraded McLaren to pole position for Saturday’s sprint race at the Miami Grand Prix.
The 26-year-old Briton made the most of the extensive upgrades on his car to outpace Mercedes’ Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli, at 19 the youngest man to lead the drivers’ championship in F1 history, and end Mercedes’ early season domination.
“I’ve always loved Miami, both on and off the track,” said Norris, who claimed his maiden F1 triumph at the compact circuit built around the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens in 2024. “And this is a good result for us, but still only at the beginning of the weekend.
“There’s still a long way to go, but it’s nice to kick off by doing this. We’ve got a lot of new upgrades on the car and it is nice to feel some grip again — and nice to reward the guys and girls who have put a lot of work into this.”
Asked if he felt this indicated that the defending constructors’ champions had regained the initiative from McLaren, Norris was cautious.
“It’s so tough to know because every track is different. We’ve known that this track has always been good to us, but we knew that what we were bringing was hopefully going to be a good step so it’s nice that our estimations have proved to be correct.
“The team deserve that… Since the first lap today, I felt very comfortable and I thought I had a bit of rear grip, so it is good to start with pole.”

McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri, who won last year’s race, was a close third ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, four-time Max Verstappen of Red Bull and early season leader George Russell of Mercedes.
Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was seventh in the second Ferrari, the Italian team along with Red Bull having brought major upgrade packages to the Miami race.
It was the first time this year that Mercedes had been outpaced in a qualifying session, after three races run before the five-week hiatus due to the conflict in the Middle East.
A disappointed Russell said, “I think it is pretty surprising how big a jump McLaren and Ferrari have made. It’s much bigger than we expected, even if this has never been a favourite circuit for me.”
He added that he had struggled with overheating tyres and other problems throughout Friday.
Verstappen was also disappointed, but realistic and said he could see the positives in Red Bull’s improved performance thanks to their upgrades, but added that the team were still “very weak” in the high-speed section of the track.
“We need to work on that,” he said, a comment repeated by Ferrari’s Hamilton, who said he had hoped Ferrari’s extensive upgrade package would have delivered greater rewards.

May 1, 2026; Salt Lake City, Utah, USA; Vegas Golden Knights right wing Mitch Marner (93) celebrates with teammates after scoring a goal against the Utah Mammoth during the second period in game six of the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Delta Center. Mandatory Credit: Rob Gray-Imagn Images Mitch Marner scored two goals and had an assist as the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Utah Mammoth 5-1 to clinch their first-round Western Conference playoff series in Game 6 on Friday in Salt Lake City.
It was the sixth career three-point playoff game for Marner, tying his postseason high. Brett Howden scored a goal for the third straight game and Colton Sissons and Cole Smith also scored goals for Vegas, which advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the sixth time in its nine-year history.
Carter Hart made 21 saves for the Golden Knights, who will face the Ducks in the Western Conference semifinals. Anaheim eliminated the two-time defending conference champion Edmonton Oilers in six games.
Kailer Yamamoto scored a goal and Karel Vejmelka finished with 21 saves for Utah, which was playing its first playoff series since the franchise moved from Arizona in April 2024.
Vegas took a 1-0 lead at the 15:02 mark of the first period. Marner’s shot from the high slot caromed off the end boards straight to Howden parked alone by the left post. Howden swept in a shot for his fourth goal in three games.
The Golden Knights came within inches of doubling the lead early in the second period. Tomas Hertl’s attempt from the left circle squeaked past Vejmelka and was within inches of the goal line before the Mammoth goalie reached back and knocked it away.
Marner made it 2-0 with 44.1 seconds left in the second period. His first goal of the playoffs, a slap shot from the top of the right circle, went past Vejmelka’s glove side and inside the far left corner.
It snapped a 10-game goal drought in the playoffs for Marner that dated back to last season, when he was playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Utah cut the deficit to 2-1 with 12:19 remaining in the third period when Yamamoto came down the right wing and snapped a shot past Hart’s stick side.
Vegas restored the two-goal margin just 1:58 later when Sissons shoveled the rebound of a Brayden McNabb point shot past Vejmelka’s stick side.
Marner sealed the win by netting a power-play goal with 7:51 to go, ripping in a rebound of a Shea Theodore shot from the low slot.
Utah pulled Vejmelka for an extra attacker with 4:15 left, and Smith added an empty-netter from inside his own blue line with 3:36 remaining to end the scoring.

Delhi Capitals batting all-rounder Ashutosh Sharma said he relishes his role as a finisher after his side snapped a three-match losing streak with a seven-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in an IPL match here.
Ashutosh struck an unbeaten 25 off 15 balls, hitting four boundaries, as Delhi successfully chased down a daunting 226-run target with five balls to spare on Friday.
“I enjoy being a finisher for my team. The team has trusted me to bat in these situations and I enjoy playing in these moments. I always feel that as long as I am at the crease, I can win the game for my team,” Ashutosh said at the post-match press conference.
Chasing a stiff total, Delhi was laid a solid foundation by KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka, who stitched together a 110-run opening partnership.
“In T20 cricket nowadays, a lot depends on the opening partnership and the powerplay. Our openers played really well and because of that we were in the game throughout and could take it till the end,” Ashutosh said.
Delhi’s overseas pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Kyle Jamieson had earlier set the tone by removing Rajasthan’s explosive openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi inside the first two overs.
“We wanted to get their opening partnership out early, as they have been doing well in previous matches. That was our plan and it worked, which was good for us.” Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals batting coach Vikram Rathour admitted that poor execution with the ball cost his side the match.
“The bowlers couldn’t execute their plans again today. 226 we felt was enough on this surface, they should have been able to defend that.
“When you are defending that kind of total it is important to have a good powerplay. We gave away lots of runs and didn’t take any wicket,” he said.
Despite the defeat, Rathour drew positives from the batting effort, particularly the response after the early loss of openers. Skipper Riyan Parag led from the front with a 90 off 50 balls, while Dhruv Jurel contributed 42.
“We were consistently getting good starts. Both our openers were doing well for us in every match. So, this was the first time that both got out early. So as a team, I think it was important how we came out of that situation and how we played.
“The way Riyan and Jurel batted at that time, the partnership they built, and the way Donovan finished it, it was really good to see,” Rathour said.

Matt Olson also went deep, while Austin Riley, Mauricio Dubon and Ronald Acuna had two hits each. Didier Fuentes (1-0) got the win in relief for Atlanta, which erased a six-run deficit and won for the fourth time in its last five.
Mickey Moniak homered among his two hits and Tyler Johnston also had two hits for Colorado, which has lost three of its last four.
The Braves, who trailed 6-1 after six innings, got a run in the seventh and then tied it in the eighth when Zach Agnos and Jaden Hill walked the bases loaded with one out.
Dubon tripled down the right field line to make it 6-5. Then came home with the tying run on Riley’s sacrifice fly.
Juan Mejia (0-3) walked Jonah Heim to lead off the ninth and Harris followed with his seventh homer of the season to give Atlanta the lead.
Robert Suarez pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
The first six Rockies batters reached in the first inning against Grant Holmes, and 10 went to the plate in the frame. Edouard Julien led off with a walk, Moniak singled and Hunter Goodman drove in the first run with a double.

Czech javelin legend and former coach of Neeraj Chopra, Jan Zelezny, has teamed up with Japan star Haruka Kitaguchi as her coach, the athlete announced in an Instagram post on Friday.
“After our training camp in South Africa, I’m excited to announce that I have officially started working with true legend Jan Zelezny,” Kitaguchi, the Olympic women’s javelin champion, said in the post.
“I am incredibly honoured to begin this new chapter with him.”
Zelezny, 59, is a three-time Olympic javelin champion and still holds the world record with a throw of 98.48 metres, set in 1996. He coached Neeraj from late 2024 to early 2026, a spell in which the 2020 Olympic champion breached his 90-metre mark, at the Doha Diamond League.
The two mutually parted ways in January 2026.
Kitaguchi, 28, moved to the Czech Republic in 2019 and began training with local coach David Sekerak. Sekerak has since led her to the 2023 world title and the 2024 Olympic crown, together with two Diamond League titles.
Kitaguchi won gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest and the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was the host nation’s main medal hope at the 2025 world championships in Tokyo, but failed to reach the final.
An elbow injury restricted Kitaguchi to just two competitions in the build-up to the championships, and her best throw of 60.38 metres placed her 14th in qualifying.
Announcing her partnership with Zelezny, Kitaguchi said she was “looking forward to absorbing everything I can — not just about javelin technique, but also the elite mentality it takes to succeed”.
