Variety reports that Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube are all in talks to return for 24 Jump Street, the third installment of the comedy franchise. Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) will direct the film, and he also wrote the script with Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first two movies, are set to produce along with Neal H. Moritz.

24 Jump Street

After 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, you would imagine that the next installment would be 23 Jump Street, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. Will the film allude to another sequel we never got to see? Maybe the Men in Black crossover? Anything is possible.

Given how long the sequel has been in development hell — well over a decade at this point — I had pretty much given up hope we’d ever see Schmidt and Jenko again, but I’m glad to be proven wrong.

Channing Tatum Didn’t Think It Would Happen Either

Just last year, Tatum opened up about the long-delayed 23 Jump Street, which he described as “the best script I’ve ever read for me and Jonah [Hill].” Unfortunately, despite his enthusiasm, Tatum didn’t think the sequel would move forward — mainly due to the hefty costs associated with the numerous producers involved, or, more specifically, one in particular.

“I get asked more about ‘Jump Street 3’ than any other movie on the face of the planet that I’ve ever done,” Tatum said. “I don’t think it’ll ever happen. The problem is the overhead. It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film — if not more — because of all the producers involved. It’s just too top-heavy. It falls over every time.“

Tatum added that although he, Hill, and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had all agreed to significantly reduce their producer fees to help make the sequel happen, Neal H. Moritz’s asking price remained a major obstacle. “Neal’s price for a producer fee is huge,” Tatum said. “And to be honest, that’s what’s killing it.“

With today’s news, it would seem they’ve found a way forward.
