44 Things to Do With Your Boys

44 Things to Do With Your Boys

14. Spa day

Even if you don’t think of yourself as a spa guy, everyone can find something for them. Sweating it out in the sauna or steam room, especially after a big night out, is a classic boys activity of yore. Cold plunging is also GQ approved and has a built-in competitive element.

15. A museum

In the endless search for third places (venues that aren’t your office or your home), museums often get forgotten. Rather than only stepping foot in museums or art galleries when vacationing abroad, find one in your town and literally save it for a rainy day. You might even learn something.

16. Camping

Camping immediately taps into a childhood sleepover vibe, in the best way. There are levels to this too. No one is making you rough it as an adult. Car camping, glamping, or even ending your night around the campfire by resting your head at some bare-bones log cabin all count. Even if factors outside your control—poor weather, rowdy neighbors—bog you down, you’ll feel great about spending a weekend without being tethered to your phone.

17. Walking

An old chestnut that has endured for centuries, going on a walk is a wise move to utilize time with your boys who live in proximity to you. Strolling around your own community can be idyllic as hell, but this can also be expanded to destination-based walking (perhaps to that lunch spot you like that’s a few neighborhoods away), location-based walking (driving to a park or a greenway), or purpose-based walking (conquering the entire length of Manhattan, et cetera).

18. Hiking

“Kerry Washington’s husband, Nnamdi, and I, we hike together. I usually get my boys, and I go for a hike. I started that in the pandemic, because I felt like, what way can we come together, have deeper meaningful conversations, have some laughs, and also stay fit? And it’s hiking. So I’m like that guy who, usually, my bro dates are hiking. ‘Hey man, get your sneakers on. Let’s go. We’re going to go hiking for three hours.’ Where are we going to go? We’ll meet up, meet midway between our houses and hike it out and stretch and laugh and talk, and that’s about it. And everyone goes on with their lives. But you feel more fulfilled, actually. Maybe because I’m 55, I think I’ve sort of stopped the ‘meet in the bar.’ If anything, I like to meet somewhere where there’s something else going on, even just going for a walk. It sounds so pedestrian. The idea of getting someone and saying, ‘Hey, let’s go for a walk,’ it’s so old school, but it’s really, really, really awesome. So I think more dudes should do that.” —Colman Domingo, actor, writer, and director

19. Skiing or snowboarding

In the winter months, you can spot a skier or snowboarder a mile away, usually by the goggle tan. If that sounds like you, find some like-minded bros in your area and grab some lift tickets.

20. Skateboarding

Same as above, just replace fresh pow with buttery concrete.

21. A yoga or pilates class

Be mindful of disrupting a zenlike, mostly female workout class with the sights and sounds of seven lumbering oafs. (One GQ editor recently reported attending a hot yoga class that was 60% dudes.) But don’t let that stop you from working on your flexibility, kings.

22. Cook or grill (and more!)

“I’ve recently been into playing a lot of video games with my friends, cooking/grilling, exploring abandoned places or just any cool space.” —Gio Luciano, NYC line cook

23. Build or renovate something

Make yourself useful and hang some shelving, redo a kitchen, or finally help your boy with the sick backyard finish that gazebo.

24. Shopping

Your menswear-obsessed friends will relish the chance to go thread-for-thread with you, as well as offer opinions on what looks good on you, something all men need more of. If you can’t spring for the expensive stuff, the vintage store in your town will, at the very least, have one affordable T-shirt with your name on it. You don’t just have to shop for clothes either! If you’re the type that prefers to run errands with other people, put up the bat-signal in the group chat and see if anyone wants to come with you.
