“I know it feels like it’s the end of the world, but it’s not.” The official trailer has finally debuted for a movie titled The Optimist, also titled The Optimist: The Bravest Act Is Truth in full, made by filmmaker Finn Taylor. This originally premiered back in 2023 at the Hamptons Film Festival but has been on hold for the past 3 years getting ready for release. Now finally set to open in theaters nationwide starting in March 2026 coming up. Set against the majestic landscapes of Northern California, this centers on the unexpected bond between an ailing Holocaust survivor and a troubled teen. For more than sixty years, Children’s store owner Herbert Helle has lived with the weight of the horrors he endured. As illness forces him to confront the silence he has kept—even from his own family—he forms a surprising friendship with Abbey, a teenager navigating her own emotional fractures. Through their growing connection, Herbert is inspired to finally share his truth, opening a path toward empathy, forgiveness, and renewal. Starring Stephen Lang & Elsie Fisher, with Luke David Blumm, Leah Pipes, Ben Geurens, Ursula Parker, Slavko Sobin, Stella Stocker, Oskar Hes, and Robin Weigert. The making of this movie was a 10+ year effort from producer Jeanine Thomas, who met Herbert and developed the story before his passing. Actually looks quite moving.

Here’s the official trailer (+ two posters) for Finn Taylor’s film The Optimist, direct from YouTube:

“With The Optimist, I wanted to explore trauma from two generational vantage points: Herbert’s hidden memories of the Holocaust and Abby’s struggles as a young person in contemporary America… The Optimist is part of my continuing journey — one grounded in growing in love rather than fear, finding purpose when life feels heavy, and helping to make the world better for all of us. I’m committed to creating stories that remind us that even in our most challenging moments, there is hope. And that healing begins when we show up for one another.” –Producer Jeanine Thomas

The Optimist: The Bravest Act Is Truth, formerly titled Avenue of the Giants, is written and directed by American writer / filmmaker Finn Taylor, director of the movies Dream with the Fishes, Cherish, The Darwin Awards, and Unleashed previously. Produced by Jeanine Thomas and Noah Lang. This initially premiered at the 2023 Hamptons Film Festival a few years ago and at the USA Film Festival in 2024.
