“If you leave, I’m going to miss you so much.” Another award-winning film from Europe to keep an eye out for. This past weekend in Spain, this little film titled Sundays won the Best Film top prize at the Goya Awards in Spain (Premios Goya) – the Spanish version of the Academy Awards. Last week we featured the trailer for France’s big winner The Ties That Bind Us, now it’s the trailer for Spain’s winner Los Domingos (which won instead of Sirat). Set in the Basque Country in Northern Spain, the story follows a 17-year-old girl named Ainara pondering about the possibility of joining a cloistered convent, deepening family rifts with her aloof father and her more involving aunt. It won the Golden Shell award at the San Sebastian Film Festival last year. Described as a coming-of-age tale meets a crisis of faith drama centered around a Spanish family. This stars Blanca Soroa as Ainara, Patricia López Arnaiz, Miguel Garcés, Juan Minujín, Mabel Rivera, Nagore Aranburu. You can view English subtitles by clicking on [cc] on YouTube below.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s film Sundays, direct from YouTube:

Ainara (Blanca Soroa), a bright and idealistic 17-year-old, must decide what university degree she will pursue. Or at least, that’s what her family hopes she will. However, the young woman expresses that she feels increasingly close to God and is considering embracing the life of a cloistered nun. The news takes the entire family by surprise, creating a chasm and a trial by fire for everyone. Sundays, also known as Los Domingos in Spanish, is both written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, director of the films Lullaby, Are You, and eps of the series “Querer” previously, plus other short films. Produced by Manuel Calvo, Marisa Fernández Armenteros, Sandra Hermida, Nahikari Ipiña. This initially premiered at the 2025 San Sebastián Film Festival last year where it also won the Golden Shell top prize. It first opened in Spain in October last fall. No US release has been set yet – stay tuned. Anyone interested in watching it?
