More than four decades after producer Charles Finch began hosting an informal dinner for filmmakers in town for the Academy Awards, his pre-Oscars dinner with Chanel, which joined as partner in 2009, remains one of the most selective invitations of the weekend.
On Saturday — the eve of the ceremony — the annual gathering returned to the Polo Lounge inside The Beverly Hills Hotel, where filmmakers, actors and producers turned out to toast Hollywood. The guest list was a mix of Chanel faces, buzzy nominees and other heavyweights, including Al Pacino, Mick Jagger, Nicole Kidman, Kristen Stewart, Lily-Rose Depp, Teyana Taylor, Elle Fanning and Jessie Buckley.
The Polo Lounge courtyard quickly filled with arrivals greeting one another beneath the palms, drinks in hand, as conversations drifted between awards-season speculation and reunions among longtime collaborators.
Buckley, the favorite for Best Actress for her performance in “Hamnet” after a sweep of major awards, seemed ready to savor the moment.
“I’m looking forward to firstly having a dirty gin martini,” Buckley said with a laugh. “And then bumping into people that I’m happy to see. Having a chat and celebrating.”
She was in high spirits.
“I feel full of gratitude,” she said. “I have my entire Irish family here, and my daughter. These things are just a touchstone in a life, and you get to live it with lots of different artists that you really respect and love. So, I feel, let’s go. Let’s go and have a party.”
The Irish actress wore a powder blue silk embellished top paired with a gold and pale jade lace dress from the French house.
“Fresh off the Chanel runway,” she beamed. “I feel so privileged to wear this.”
She credited her stylist, Danielle Goldberg. “I would be a lost woman without her. She’s changed my life.”
As for what she’ll wear on Oscar night, Buckley lit up.
“I can’t wait to wear my dress tomorrow,” she teased. “I’m so moved by what they’ve made, and it’s beyond anything that I would have ever even dreamed of. It’s full of joy. And it feels very tender-forward.”
Buckley has recently favored Chanel on the red carpet, though what she chooses for the ceremony remains to be seen.
Depp, a Chanel ambassador, spoke enthusiastically about the house’s direction under creative director Matthieu Blazy.
“I love Matthieu and his vision for Chanel so much,” she said. “Every single collection, I feel like he has knocked it out of the park. I just love his vision of the Chanel woman and all of the beautiful garments that he’s presented us with. I can’t wait to see how it continues to evolve. I’m such a big fan of what he’s been doing.”
Depp arrived in a gray muslin ensemble composed of a sleeveless vest with a chain adorned with rhinestones and pearls paired with a dress from the brand’s haute couture spring collection.
“I love my look so much,” she said. “As soon as I saw this on the runway, I was like, ‘I have to wear that.’ This has been one of my favorite looks since I saw it.”
She reached for the arm of her stylist. “This is my stylist, Spencer Singer. He’s also my best friend. He put me in this fabulous outfit.”
Among the films that resonated with her this year was “Hamnet,” she said.
“‘Hamnet’ really, really killed me,” she went on. “I thought it was so incredible, so heartbreaking. The performances were so beautiful.”
She also praised another nominee in the room.
“I love ‘Sentimental Value.’ My girl Elle Fanning was so incredible in it,” Depp added. “She was one of my favorite performances all year.”
Taylor — nominated for best supporting actress for “One Battle After Another” — made an entrance in a multicolor Chanel shearling coat.
“I’ve been plotting on this coat since Monday, and I was not leaving the house until I had this coat,” she smiled. “I saw the coat. I needed that coat, and this was the perfect time to pull it out.”
As awards season winds toward its finale, Taylor, who won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress, said she’s been focused on staying present.
“It’s understanding the blessing of this all,” she said. “You’ve got to enjoy it while it’s yours. Because life is so fragile and life is so short. This is everything I’ve ever prayed for. So why not embrace it and have a ball?”
Still, had she written her acceptance speech?
“I did not yet, but I will tonight. I’m superstitious,” Taylor smiled. “I want to wait until I’m in a calm space to really get my thoughts together.”
Inside, guests eventually took their seats for dinner: Caesar salad followed by steak au poivre or roasted chicken with fries, and Marilyn’s ice cream sundae — mint chip ice cream topped with malted milk foam, hot fudge and sour cherries finished with pink cotton candy — one last indulgence before the big night.
