‘Bodyguard’ Creator, 58, Re-Teams With a ‘Game of Thrones’ Star for New Netflix Thriller

Jed Mercurio is one of Britain’s most celebrated writers. When it comes to action-packed television ready to grab high-profile attention, no one seems to have done it better in the 21st century. From the long-running Line of Duty to the currently airing Trigger Point, viewers across the world have been gripped by Mercurio’s work for many years.

Arguably his best project came back in 2018, with the breathless political thriller Bodyguard, starring the ever-brilliant Keeley Hawes and Citadel‘s Richard Madden. The series stormed not just to high ratings but also awards success, even earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series – Drama, and Madden himself walking away from the same ceremony with the trophy for Best Actor – Television Series Drama. Now, eight years later, it has been confirmed that Madden and Mercurio will be reuniting, this time for Netflix in a brand-new thriller.

Titled Trinity, the series is reported to be split into eight parts, and will feature Madden as Secretary of Defence Webb Preston. “With a technology background that makes him different from most politicians, Webb’s innovation and purpose are seen as a threat in more ways than one,” his character description reads. Alongside Madden is Surface and Loki’s Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who will portray Commander Katherine Decker, a female naval officer who served “as second-in-command on the USS Kansas, a nuclear submarine and one of the deadliest weapons on Earth.” So far, not much else is known about the series.

‘Bodyguard’ Was an Unforgettable Viewing Experience

Even eight years on, Bodyguard still has a devout audience, with many considering it one of the most underrated British shows of the 21st century. A pulse-racing six-episode miniseries that kept viewers on the edge of their seats throughout, Bodyguard was heralded by critics and audiences alike, earning a huge 93% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. In Collider’s review of the series back in 2018, Allison Keene wrote, “Bodyguard should come with a warning. There are several stretches of this twisty new thriller series that are so anxiety-inducing, with such unbearable tension, that I almost had to leave the room. I could have paused it, sure, but I didn’t actually want to stop watching it.” She continued, “I just wanted to grimace and sink as far down into the couch as possible, my heart pounding as I attempted to rationalize that the story couldn’t really do this or that, right? RIGHT? It’s stressful — in the best of ways.”

Trinity is coming to Netflix soon. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
